WAVERLY, Iowa—A trio of Knights finished in the top 10, and 15th-ranked Carleton College fired the low round each day in winning the Wartburg Spring Invitational with a 635 team score.
The Knights, now unbeaten in six tournaments this season, matched the program record for wins in a season, set by the 2014-15 squad.
Three Knights finished inside the top 10: Abby Euyang (Fy./Seattle/Lakeside School), Alyssa Akiyama (So./Cincinnati, Ohio/Seven Hills School) and Ziyi Wang (Jr./Beijing City, China/Lighthouse Christian Academy). All three ended at 12-over 156. Alexis Chan (Fy./Castle Rock, Colo./Rock Canyon) rounded out Carleton’s scoring players at 167.
“I thought, for not having played a single hole of golf for a full month, we showed pretty well,” Carleton head coach Eric Sieger said. “From tee to green we were solid, but our putting is rusty and we will need to put in a lot of work there between now and nationals.”
The Knights outdistanced St. Thomas (642), Central and St. Catherine (645). Grinnell (654) rounded out the top five teams.
“I thought the 314 score today was impressive because conditions were much tougher,” Sieger said. “Once we can get a few more reps on the greens in practice, we’ll be ready to go even lower.”
Carleton hosts its own invitational next weekend with eight other schools. Play is at Willingers Golf Club on Saturday and Northfield Golf Club on Sunday, starting at 1 p.m. both days.
