LAKE WALES, Fla.—Abby Euyang (Fy./Seattle/Lakeside) fired a nine-over par 81 in downright nasty conditions, leading eighth-ranked Carleton to a win over Calvin in the spring opener.
Carleton shot a season-worst 338 on a day that featured 20-25 mile-per-hour winds and extremely slow greens due to the wet conditions following a storm the previous day. Carleton outdistanced, Calvin (also known as the Knights) finished at 387. Host Webber International had only one player, Lindsey Ritchie, who finished T4th at 88.
“While the conditions were tough, I thought we lacked some commitment on certain shots, especially off the tee,” Carleton head coach Eric Sieger said. “We hadn’t played a competitive round for more than five months and hadn’t faced conditions like that for a while, and it showed.”
Ziyi Wang (Jr./Beijing City, China/Lighthouse Christian Academy) finished second at 84, followed by Ayumi Sakamoto (Jr./Honolulu/’Iolani) was third at 85.
Carleton is back in action at the ultra-competitive Washington University Invitational in St. Louis on April 7-8. Seven current top 25 teams will compete in the event.
