Matt Stangl ’02 was hired as head women’s golf coach prior to the 2019-20 season. He will also serve as interim head coach of the men's program for the remainder of the 2021-22 season following the retirement of long-time men's coach Jerry Ericksen.

Under Stangl’s guidance, the Carleton women’s team maintained its reputation as one of the best programs in the nation. Over the last three seasons, the Knights have been nationally ranked or receiving votes in 12 of 13 WGCA national polls, rising as high as No. 11 in the country. He has coached the squad to top-3 finishes at 11 of 13 tournaments since he was hired prior to the 2019-20 season.

A three-time letter winner for the Carleton men’s golf team, he earned All-MIAC recognition in 1999 and 2000 as he finished third and sixth, respectively, at the conference championships. A three-time Scholar-Athlete award winner in golf, Stangl finished atop the leaderboard in at least one event during each of his sophomore through senior seasons and carded scoring averages below 76 for each campaign. He also lettered twice as a member of the men’s basketball program at Carleton.

Stangl earned his law degree from Hamline University in 2012 and currently works as IAM Royalty Model Leader at Cargill. He and his family reside in St. Louis Park, Minn., where he most recently served as a member of the girls’ golf coaching staff at St. Louis Park High School.
