It reminded me how vast the world is outside of Carleton mostly. My term abroad helped me narrow down the important things in my life and realize to not be afraid to pursue them which is a very critical element as a student-athlete at Carleton.

This past summer, I participated in a Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU) program with the University of Delaware. I lived along the coast and got to experience both field and lab work. I studied the aquatic plant, algae, as my research mentor and I assessed a potential method to control the growth of harmful algal species that produce toxins that can be detrimental to the surrounding environment. Most days I worked on my project but other days I had field trips with my REU program that included visiting an aquaculture in New Jersey and earning my Delaware boating certificate. At the end of the summer, I had to write a scientific manuscript summarizing the results of my research and present it to students and faculty. It gave me a better understanding of graduate school and as an upcoming senior really helped me decide what I did and didn't want to do following graduation. Marine science is very limited at Carleton and getting to experience a lot of my learning hands-on last summer really helped enhance my knowledge of marine systems that I will be able to incorporate into my future biology classes.
