NORTHFIELD, Minn. – The Carleton College men's soccer team was unable to maintain a second-half lead at No. 1-ranked St. Olaf College and ultimately dropped a 2-1 decision in the MIAC Playoffs Semifinals. The Knights had won the last three postseason meetings against their cross-town rivals.
"Hats off to St. Olaf," said Carleton (11-7-1) head coach
Bob Carlson. "Our guys went toe-to-toe with the No. 1 team in the country. We had our moments and battled to the last second. While the result did not go our way, I'm incredibly proud of this group. Every single guy poured his heart and soul into this team, not just today, but throughout the entire season.
"I'm especially proud of our seniors, whose leadership brought a young group back to the playoffs and built a team defined by togetherness, commitment, and belief in one another. They leave a tremendous legacy.
"Our seniors will be missed, but the future is bright. This group has learned what it takes to compete and succeed at this level, and that's something we can build on."
Scoring chances were hard to come by as both sides finished the contest with only nine shots attempted, tied for the third-lowest figure this season for St. Olaf (17-0-3) and tied for second-lowest for the Knights.
Deadlocked through the first half and the early portion of the second stanza, the 55th minute saw Carleton's
Matthew Deffo finally open the scoring. The rookie dribbled into the box and got the goalkeeper to dive one way before slotting a shot the other direction. It was Deffo's ninth goal of the season, tied for second-most by a MIAC rookie this fall and the third-highest by a Carleton first-year since 1988 (see charts below).
It took nearly 11 additional minutes for St. Olaf to register another shot, but when the hosts finally did, it was the equalizer with Mateo Ormaza heading home a cross to the back post in the 66th minute.
Less than two minutes later the Oles were playing from in front as Charlie Pillar collected a clearance attempt and scored an impressive goal from about 30 yards out to push the hosts ahead, 2-1.
The Knights' best chance to level the match came in in the 81st minute. After a shot by
Ben Roman was blocked by the St. Olaf defense,
Willan Shrock had the ball inside the 18-yard box, nutmegged a defender, and was tripped by two Oles. The referee did not blow the whistle, the second time this season that the Carleton faithful felt their team was not awarded an obvious PK against the Knights' archrivals.
