Knights fall to Gustavus Adolphus on Senior Day

NORTHFIELD, Minn. – The Carleton College men's soccer team dropped a 3-1 result to Gustavus Adolphus College on Saturday.

The Knights (10-6-1, 6-4-0 MIAC) finished led visiting Gustavus Adolphus College (12-3-3, 8-0-2 MIAC) in overall shots (15-14), shots on goal (9-6), and corner kicks (5-1), but the Gusties used a trio of second-half scores to erase a halftime deficit.

Carleton broke through with the opening goal in the 42nd minute. On the counterattack, Hans Lechner sent a weighted long ball over the Gustie defense. Oscar Gates tracked it down and worked around a defender at the endline. His cross to the middle was knocked down by a defender's arm, earning a penalty kick. Asher Burt converted from the spot for his third goal of the year.

While the Knights scored shortly before halftime, Gustavus leveled the match shortly after intermission. Goalkeeper Jackson Baker collected a free kick, then booted a long ball over the Carleton backline, permitting Jack Isroff to run onto it, using the outside of his left foot to knock the ball past the hard-charging Carleton keeper Ethan Saucedo.

The 72nd minute saw an opportunity for the Knights to move back in front as Gates picked off a clearance attempt, but his shot from the top of the box sailed just outside the left post

The visitors took the lead in the 76th minute. Saucedo stopped Cal Avery's close-range shot, but the deflection caromed into the middle where Joe Florry volleyed the ball into the top of the net. Florry netted an insurance goal for Gustavus in the 79th minute.

Carleton nearly got one of those back in the 85th minute, but a header was tipped by Baker off the crossbar and kept out.

On Senior Day, the Knights celebrated the six players from the Class of 2027: Will Lankenau, Matt Murashige, Saucedo, Willan Shrock, Hays Turner, and Josh Zebrack

Up Next for the Knights
Carleton will be the No. 4 seed in the upcoming MIAC Playoffs. The Knights will host No. 5 seed Macalester College for a 2:00 p.m. match on Tuesday, Nov. 3.
