Knights outlast Augsburg in five-set thriller

MINNEAPOLIS — The Carleton volleyball team outlasted Augsburg University in a five-set thriller on Saturday evening at Si Melby Hall, capturing a 3-2 victory (25-21, 19-25, 20-25, 25-18, 15-8). With the win, the Knights improve to 11-6 overall and 2-1 in Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) play, while the Auggies fall to 4-9 overall and 1-2 in conference action.

Carleton set the tone in the opening frame, relying on efficient offense and timely defense. After the teams traded early leads out to an 8-8 tie a key 6-2 burst thanks to a pair of kills from first-year Alexis Smith and an ace from senior setter Megan Smith gave the Knights a 14-10 cushion. The Auggies came back to tie the score 17-17 before the Knights used a 6-1 spurt to extend their advantage to 23-18 behind a pair of kills from senior Rachel Bingham. They went on to put the set away at 25-21 on a set-clinching kill by Alexis Ormsby.

Augsburg responded in set two, jumping out to an early 12-4 lead. An 8-1 run, led by a pair of kills and a service ace from junior Ellewyn Swafford, brought Carleton right back to within one point (13-12). After the Auggies opened up a five-point lead (18-13), a pair of kills from sophomore Sami Torresin brought the visitors back to within two (19-17), but Augsburg pulled away in the closing stages, scoring six of the final eight points to take the set 25-19 on a kill by Taliah Triggs to tie the match at 1-1.

Carleton looked to regain momentum in the third set, bolting out to a 5-0 advantage early on a kill by junior libero Madeleine Dimitre and an ace from Smith. Augsburg answered with a 5-0 run of its own to level the score. The Knights led 11-10, but that would be the last time as the Auggies used a 5-1 run to open up a 15-12 lead and would not look back. Late kills by Marley Mitchell and Triggs sealed the 25-20 victory the victory for the home team to take a 2-1 set lead.

Refusing to back down, the Knights controlled the fourth set from the start. Trailing 3-1, Carleton launched a dominant 6-0 surge served by Ormsby, which included two service aces, to surge ahead 7-3. Later in the set, a four-point streak extended Carleton's lead to 16-9 following kills from senior Jennifer Bricker and Ormsby. The Maize and Blue led by as many as eight (18-10) before scoring the final three points and closing out the set 25-18 on a Swafford kill to force a decisive fifth set.

In the final frame, Carleton hit its stride down the stretch. Tied 6-6, Carleton took complete control of the tiebreaker. Back-to-back aces by Bingham made it 9-6. One point later, sophomore Aditi Mukhirala served a four-point run to open up a 13-7 advantage as part of a 9-2 surge to close out the set, capping off the 15-8 victory to take the match in five sets for the second straight night.

Carleton displayed a balanced attack and strong defensive performances across the board. Ellewyn Swafford led the Knights with 14 total points, posting 11 kills, while hitting .364 alongside two solo blocks and an ace. Jennifer Bricker hit a sparkling .500 with 10 kills and a team-high four blocks (one solo, three assists). Alexis Ormsby contributed 10 kills and four service aces, while Rachel Bingham added seven kills, 13 digs, and two aces. Setter Megan Smith orchestrated the offense with 41 assists, nine digs, and three service aces, while libero Madeleine Dimitre anchored the backline with a match-high 21 digs.
