Knights fall to Gustavus in home opener

Box Score NORTHFIELD, Minn. – The Carleton College football team dropped its first home game of the season 56-7 to the Gustavus Adolphus College Gusties.

Carleton (2-2, 2-1 MIAC) forced a turnover on downs on the first drive from Gustavus (2-2, 1-2 MIAC), but punted the ball away after a three-and-out. Gustie quarterback Jacob Ginskey hit tight end Jordan Wold on a screen, and the senior made two Knights miss on a 69-yard catch-and-run touchdown with 9:03 to go in the first quarter. On the next drive, punter Jack Sieben muffed the snap after what looked like a Carleton stop late in the first quarter, but Sieben was able to scramble for a first down and extend a drive that ended with a rushing touchdown from Walker Hennen at 13:50 in the second.

The special teams woes continued for Carleton as Matt Geivett saw a punt blocked and returned for a touchdown by Ben O'Neil just over a minute and a half later. The Gusties turned on the jets with three more second-quarter scores, with a TD pass from quarterback Jacob Ginskey to Brayden Sturm sandwiched by two Ginskey touchdown runs.

The Gusties got two more second-half touchdowns, with Hennen running another in and Sturm catching another TD pass in the third quarter. Carleton got on the board when rookie QB Logan Lachermeier led a 75-yard drive downfield and hit James Alexander for a 9-yard fourth-quarter touchdown.

Carleton saw three different QBs take snaps, with Lachermeier leading the way at 8-for-13 with 89 yards, a touchdown, and two picks. Tyler Dimond led the Knights receivers with four catches and 60 yards. His four grabs pushed him past former teammate Nathan Streiff to a tie for seventh-most career receptions in Carleton history (see chart below). Alexander caught his first touchdown of the season. Injuries forced new faces on defense to step up, including leading tackler Josh Lombard, who registered nine stops and 0.5 tackles for loss. Stefan Pavlovich had eight stops and 1.0 TFL. Dylan Asgarian carded six tackles and his first career sack.

Ginskey finished 15-for-21 for 243 passing yards and three touchdowns. He also ran for 29 yards and a pair of TDs. Hennen tallied 51 rush yards and two scores. Liam Frommelt led the game in receiving with 6 grabs for 81 yards. The Gustie defense totaled four sacks and four interceptions.
