Knights unable to withstand Johnnies’ passing game

NORTHFIELD, Minn. – The Carleton College football team was unable to match a fast start by No. 3 ranked Saint John's University and dropped a 49-10 result at Laird Stadium.

The Johnnies (7-0, 6-0 MIAC) scored on their first three possessions via receiving touchdowns by Riley Schwellenbach and Thomas Jacobs, and a rushing touchdown by Sedrick Melvin, Jr. The early burst put them up 21-0.

Early in the second quarter, the Knights (4-3, 4-2 MIAC) put together a 12-play drive that covered 64 yards and ended in a 28-yard field goal by Matt Geivett. Facing fourth-and-eight at the Saint John's 38-yard line, Logan Lachermeier hit Jaxon Watson for a 13-yard gain and a first down to extend the drive. After three straight incompletions from the Johnnies' 11-yard line, the Knights turned to their kicker, making the score 21-3 with 6:21 to go in the first half.

Carleton was unable to keep the momentum on defense, as Trey Feeney completed 11 passes on the next Saint John's drive. The Johnnies' march culminated with a throw to Thomas Jacobs in the back of the end zone for a five-yard touchdown reception, giving the visitors a 28-3 lead at the break.

The Johnnies' passing attack continued to roll in the second half, as Feeney finished the day 51-of-58, with 531 yards, and six touchdowns. The scores were spread out among five different receivers, with Jacobs being the lone receiver with two scores.

The Knights found the end zone early in the fourth quarter. Lachermeier looked for Tyler Dimond at the 1-yard line, and Dimond made a circus catch to Carleton on the doorstep. Evan Olds followed up with a 1-yard scamper around the right side for his fifth rushing touchdown on the season.

Defensively, the Knights were led by Rider McCormick with 11 tackles, nine of them solo. The senior also broke up a pass. Ronan Thomas returned from injury with seven tackles, one for loss.

Up Next for the Knights
Carleton will travel to Augsburg University in Minneapolis for a 12:00 pm kickoff on Saturday, Oct. 31.
