Knights fall at Concordia in five-set heartbreaker

MOORHEAD, Minn. — The Carleton volleyball team pushed host Concordia College to extra points in the deciding fifth set, but ultimately suffered a heartbreaking 3-2 defeat (17-25, 25-21, 25-21, 18-25, 14-16) on Saturday evening inside Memorial Auditorium. With the loss, the Knights move to 13-8 overall and 4-3 in Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) play, while the Cobbers improve to 10-9 overall and 3-2 in conference action.

Concordia set the tone in the opening set, relying on a strong serving performance. The Cobbers collected five aces in set to claim a 25-17 win. Back-to-back aces from Betsy Schiltz keyed an early four-point run for the Cobbers to build a 5-2 lead. Carleton trimmed the deficit to 9-8 following a kill by first-year Alexis Ormsby. The Cobbers all but put the frame away with a 10-2 run later in the set—highlighted by two Annie Horan service aces—to take command at 24-13. Although the Knights rattled off four straight points, Concordia closed the set with a Horan kill to take the 1-0 match lead.

The Knights rallied in set two, hitting .267 with 16 kills to level the match. Down 9-8, Carleton gained momentum through a 6-2 run, highlighted by consecutive kills by junior Ellewyn Swafford to pull ahead 14-11. Concordia answered to tie the set at 15-15, but the Knights responded with a decisive 6-0 run on junior libero Madeleine Dimitre's serve—featuring two kills from senior Rachel Bingham, plus kills from Swafford and sophomore Sami Torresin and an ace from Dimitre herself—to pull ahead 21-15. The Cobbers cut the lead to three (22-19) before the Knights scored three of the final five points to close out the 25-21 set win.

Carleton carried its rhythm into set three to take a 2-1 match lead. Carleton used an early 6-0 run to create an 8-5 advantage. Trailing 15-14 later in the frame, the Knights put together a key 8-0 run behind Dimitre's serve, as Swafford recorded a kill and two blocks alongside Bingham and Torresin to push Carleton ahead 22-15. The Cobbers mounted a late 6-1 run to trim the gap to 23-21, but a Bingham kill followed by a Concordia setting error sealed the 25-21 victory for the Knights.

The Cobbers fought back in the fourth frame, capitalizing on late scoring runs to force a fifth set. Carleton built an 8-7 edge after a six-point run served by Dimitre. Bingham and Swafford each had a pair of kills in the spurt, but Concordia responded to level the set. Tied 17-17, the Cobbers took control by winning eight of the final nine points—fueled by three late kills from Wendi Peterson—to secure the 25-18 win and force the deciding fifth set.

The final frame was a nail-biting, back-and-forth affair that featured four ties and two lead changes. Concordia jumped out to a 6-2 lead before Carleton launched a furious comeback. Trailing 9-6, the Knights executed a 3-0 surge on Swafford's serve—keyed by an Angelina Erhardt kill and a pair of Ormsby finishes—to knot the score at 9-9. Four straight points saw Concordia out to a 13-9 lead, but Carleton refused to yield, staving off three match points on the tail end of a dramatic 5-1 run to tie the set at 14-14. However, Concordia halted the comeback with consecutive points to claim the 16-14 victory and seal the 3-2 match win.

Rachel Bingham led Carleton's attack with a team-high 15 kills, while adding eight digs and four block assists. Ellewyn Swafford matched Bingham for team-high scoring honors with 17 points, posting 13 kills on a .233 hitting percentage alongside seven total blocks (one solo, six assists). Alexis Ormsby narrowly missed double figures with nine kills, seven digs, and an ace, while Sami Torresin chipped in six kills and four total blocks. Setter Megan Smith orchestrated the offense with 38 assists and gathered 17 digs to log a double-double. Libero Madeleine Dimitre anchored the defense with a match-high 29 digs to go along with eight assists and a service ace.
