Dimond's record-setting day leads Knights to 28-21 win over St. Scholastica

NORTHFIELD, Minn. – Senior wideout Tyler Dimond caught seven passes for 214 yards and two touchdowns, leading the Carleton College football team to a 28-21 win over the College of St. Scholastica Saints. Dimond now holds the Carleton record for total touchdowns (34) and points scored (204).

Carleton (3-2, 3-1 MIAC) has beaten St. Scholastica (0-5, 0-4) in all six meetings between the programs since the Saints' introduction to the MIAC. Head Coach Tom Journell acknowledged a hard-fought win in unique circumstances on a day where winds gusted near 40 miles an hour, saying "We had a total team win today. I'm really proud of our staff and players. It was a field position game with the strong winds, so our kicking game was key. In particular, first-year kicker/punter Matt Geivett flipped the field". Geivett was perfect on extra points (4-for-4), and averaged 46.7 yards on six punts, four of which landed inside the Saints 20-yard line.

Tyler Mastronardi found receiver Jaxon Watson in the end zone for an eight-yard touchdown and 7-0 Carleton lead after the opening drive. The Knights, using a 2-QB system, doubled their lead at 13:22 in the second quarter when Logan Lachermeier hit Dimond on a slant that turned into a 60-yard touchdown jaunt. That Dimond touchdown was his record-breaking 33rd career score in maize and blue.

Saints back Stephan Jackson cut into the Carleton lead with a 1-yard touchdown run with 8:15 left in the second quarter. Just 14 seconds later, a Knights handoff mistake led to a loose ball and a 4-yard scoop-and-score for Scholastica defensive end Gabe Kattchee, tying the game at 14. Late in the first half, Lachermeier hit Dimond on two consecutive big plays for 72 total yards and a touchdown, giving the Knights a 21-14 halftime lead.

Running back Evan Olds concluded an 80-yard Carleton drive with a 4-yard rushing touchdown with 5:14 to go in the third quarter. Jackson made the most of a methodical 12-play drive for the Saints, scoring another rushing touchdown for St. Scholastica with 9:02 to go in the game. The visiting Saints worked their way into Carleton territory in the final 3 minutes with a chance to tie, but a game-sealing interception from senior safety Jake Reinke secured a happy Homecoming for the Knights.

Lachermeier completed 9-of-14 passes for 172 yards and 2 touchdowns. Mastronardi threw for 121 yards and a touchdown. Olds collected 50 rush yards and a touchdown on 10 attempts. Dimond recorded 7 catches for 214 yards and 2 TDs. Besides the scoring records, Dimond is now third in Carleton career receiving yards and seventh in career receptions. His 214-yard performance is the 7th-largest single-game receiving total for a Knight (see charts below).

Cornerback Jackson Reade led Carleton in tackles with nine and broke up a pass. Linebacker Zach Ventura totaled 2.0 tackles for loss. Senior corner Rider McCormick broke up a pair of passes. The secondary held the Saints to just 3.8 yards per pass attempt and a 25 percent completion percentage.
