Matt Drake's game-winner lifts Knights to 74-73 win over Concordia

NORTHFIELD, Minn. – Matt Drake conjured up some "West Gym magic" as he capped his game-high 29 points by making the go-ahead 3-pointer with only 2.5 seconds remaining to lift Carleton College to a 74-73 victory over visiting Concordia-Moorhead.

The 29 points was the second-highest single-game total of Drake's career, and it marked his eighth-game this season of at least 20 points. He was 8-of-12 overall, 6-of-8 from beyond the 3-point line, and 7-of-7 at the charity stripe.

Carleton (8-5, 4-1 MIAC) trailed 23-21 with nine minutes remaining in the first half but closed the opening stanza with a 24-5 run capped by thundering dunk by Omar Kaba that gave the Knights a 45-28 advantage at intermission.

The Knights led by as many as 20 points early in the second half and still held a 19-point advantage, 54-35, with 13:00 minutes remaining. Concordia (9-4, 1-3 MIAC) caught fire and came storming back with a 27-8 run to tie the game at 62-62 with 4:20 remaining. It stayed a one-possession game the rest of the way.

The Cobbers earned their first lead since midway through the opening half when Jackson Loge scored a putback bucket with 10.3 seconds to go. The Knights raced up the floor, and Drake swished his sixth 3-pointer of the game to provide the winning margin.

Drake's backcourt-mate Josh Engelberg chipped in 16 points, five rebounds, two assists, a steal, and a blocked shot. Sam Koelling added 13 points and five boards in addition to three assists, none bigger than setting up the game-winning shot.

Jacob Cook (24 points, 13 rebounds) and Loge (18 points, 10 rebounds) both had double-doubles for Concordia.

Carleton shot 48.1 percent overall, went 10-of-28 (35.7 percent) from 3-point range, and was 14-of-19 (73.7 percent) at the free-throw line. Concordia made 44.1 percent of its shots, was 8-of-25 (32.0 percent) from beyond the arc, and converted 13-of-16 attempts at the charity stripe.
