Hot shooting propels Knights to win at St. Kate's

ST. PAUL, Minn. --  Liesl McCallum tallied a game-high 23 points to lead the Carleton College women's basketball team to a 64-61 victory at St. Catherine University.

"A terrific road win for our young team," said Carleton head coach Tammy Metcalf-Filzen. "We got great minutes from everyone. I'm proud of our effort, our fight, and our execution."

The Knights (6-10, 3-6 MIAC) snapped a four-game slide with one of their best shooting performances of the season as Carleton connected at a 46.2 percent clip overall and was 6-of-14 (42.9 percent) from deep.

The early goings of the game were back and forth, but Carleton closed the opening period with an 8-2 spurt—including the first bucket of the season for Liz Hiatt and a triple from Taylor Dente—to take a 16-9 advantage into the second quarter.

The momentum continued to shift from one side to the other into the second stanza, with St. Catherine (7-9, 2-7 MAC) using a 10-3 run to knot the score at 19-19 early in the period.

The Knights finished the first half with a 12-4 run, including five points by Maggie Winesett, and carried a 37-27 lead into intermission after Carleton shot 60 percent in the quarter.

Saint Catherine was able to find its way back into the game during the second half. The Wildcats opened the third quarter with a 16-5 burst and gained a 43-42 lead with nearly 4:00 to play in the period. After seeing the game tied four times more times, Jasmine Maldonado's triple late in the quarter gave Carleton a 51-48 lead heading into the final stanza.

The Knights enjoyed a 61-53 advantage midway through the fourth quarter, but St. Catherine got stingy on defense and did not surrender a field goal over the final five minutes.

McCallum hit two free throws with 30 seconds remaining to put Carleton ahead 63-59. St. Catherine scored a quick layup to make it a one-possession game. The Knights missed 3-of-4 free throws in the final 20 seconds, but the defense came up with two late stops to preserve the victory.

This was McCallum's third game of at least 20 points over the Knights' last six contests. She added five rebounds and four blocked shots. Winesett finished with 12 points thanks to a pair of 3-pointers, and Audrey Whitney chipped in 10 points. Addy Huss was held to only five points but found other ways to make an impact, finishing with game highs of eight rebounds, four steals, and four assists.

St. Catherine totaled 12 steals in the game and turned 14 offensive rebounds into 24 second-chance points. However, the Carleton defense limited the Wildcats to only 36.1 percent shooting overall and a frigid 2-of-19 (10.5 percent) showing from 3-point range. Elle Covey (17), Jordyn Peed (15), and Hattie Fox (13) were in double figures for St. Kate's
