ST. LOUIS PARK, Minn. – With rainy weather forecast for Saturday, the Carleton College men's tennis team moved one-half of its season-opening doubleheader up a day, and the Knights dispatched Concordia College-Moorhead 7-0.
Akshay Garapati,
Baiyun Jing,
Zach Leslie, and
Jack Rivkin each started the campaign with wins in both singles and doubles action.
Rivkin and Garapati prevailed 6-1 atop the doubles lineup, with Leslie and Jing winning by the same margin at the second slot. The other doubles contest took a little longer to resolve, but
Ezra Bernhard and
Owen Heidtke ultimately proved victorious by a 7-6 (7-3) margin.
Solo play saw the Knights (1-0, 1-0 MIAC) win five of the six matches in straight sets. Garapati prevailed 6-3, 6-4 at the second spot, while Leslie notched a 6-2, 6-3 win at No. 3 singles. Rivkin raced to a 6-2, 6-2 triumph at the fourth slot.
Newcomer
Yihe Zhang made his collegiate debut with a 6-1, 6-2 victory at No. 5 singles, while
Miles Lee edged his opponent at the sixth slot by a 6-4, 6-2 tally.
Jing completed the sweep as he rallied from a set down to win 5-7, 6-2, 1-0 (10-7) at No. 1 singles.
Up Next for the Knights
While Carleton moved the Concordia match earlier in search of indoor court space, the Knights will shift locations for their other match originally slated for Saturday, Sept. 20. Coach
Stephan Zweifel's squad will now play at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire instead of hosting the Blugolds.
