Knights rally for 4-2 win at Grinnell

GRINNELL, Iowa – The Carleton College men's soccer team got back into the win column as the Knights scored a pair of key second-half goals less than 30 seconds apart to secure a 4-2 victory at Grinnell College. Willan Shrock tallied a brace while Jonathan Vonderlage scored one goal and assisted on two others.

The Knights (4-1-0) fell behind in the 25th minute as the result of a turnover in the defensive third, which the Pioneers (1-2-3) took full advantage of as Samuel Gojjam slipped a pass through the Carleton backline for Emmett Krez to shoot into the right side of the goal.

The visitors responded in the 28th minute. Asher Burt stole a pass in Carleton's attacking half to put the Knights on the counterattack. Eventually Hudson Benites powered a low pass through the Grinnell backline to Burt, who one-touched a pass across the top of the six-yard box for a wide-open Vonderlage laser into the open goal. It was his eighth career score and the first of the 2025 campaign.

The 37th minute saw Vonderlage elude a defender, then serve the ball from the right wing back across the box for Schrock's one-time finish inside the left post for his second goal of the season.

Carleton carried the 2-1 advantage into intermission, but Grinnell leveled the match in the 61st minute when Gojjam and Krez teamed up again for the Pioneers second score.

The 64th minute saw Schrock tally his second goal of the day as he dribbled into the box and somehow worked between three defenders before blasting a left-footed shot into the net.

Only 24 elapsed before the Knights doubled their lead. Benites stole the ball near midfield and spung Ben Pennell and Vonderlage for a give-and-go attack that resulted in Pennell's fifth goal of the season. It was the 28th score of the senior's career, moving him into a tie with Bobby Phillips '08 for third in recorded program history (see charts below).

The Carleton defense would prohibit the Pioneers from attempting a shot the balance of the contest.

Up Next for the Knights
