No. 40 Knights top St. Kate's, 8-1

MINNEAPOLIS – The No. 40-ranked Carleton College women's tennis team improved to 9-2 on the season and 4-0 in MIAC play after posting an 8-1 triumph over St. Catherine University in a match played at the Baseline Tennis Center. Amelia Asfaw, Mariam Nechiporuk, and Ryann Witter each won in both singles and doubles.
 
The Knights got a quick victory at No. 1 doubles as Asfaw and Nechiporuk posted an 8-1 triumph. Witter and Ingrid Smithrallied from a 5-2 deficit to win 8-6 at No. 2 doubles. Similarly, Amanda Black and Kat Smiricinschi battled back from a 5-2 hole to force their match at No. 3 doubles into a tiebreaker, however, this time St. Catherine (9-3, 4-2 MIAC) eventually notched its lone team point with an 8-7 (7-3) result.
 
All six singles matches went into Carleton's column.
 
Kiley Pickens was first to finish, notching a 6-1, 6-1 win at No. 4 singles to improve to 9-1 on the season and 25-1 for her collegiate career. Piper Brown closed out a 6-0, 6-1 victory at No. 6 singles, and Nechiporuk followed with a 6-3, 6-1 triumph at the second slot. Miriam Shteyman contributed a 6-1, 6-4 triumph at No. 3 singles.
 
The other two singles matches witnessed a lot more drama.
 
Asfaw dropped the opening set at No. 1 singles before storming back to prevail 4-6, 6-0, 1-0 (10-3) for her seventh victory this season. Witter also went the distance, winning a 6-3, 3-6, 1-0 (11-9) thriller.
