RIVER FALLS, Wis. – Sophomore guards
Josh Engelberg and
Matt Drake tallied career-highs of 32 and 24 points, respectively, to lead the Carleton College men's basketball team to a come-from-behind 81-76 victory at University of Wisconsin-River Falls.
The Knights (1-1) faced their largest deficit on the evening, 56-47 with 10:45 to play, before Carleton responded with a 12-0 run thanks to a trio of 3-pointers by Engelberg and a triple by
Tobias Averill. The visitors would not trail again.
A tight first half saw neither side led by more than a half-dozen points. Drake scored 15 points before intermission to pace all scorers, but UW-River Falls (1-2) caried a 39-35 advantage into the break.
An old-fashioned three-point play by Drake pulled Carleton to within 49-47 with 14:49 remaining. Neither side scored for the next two minutes, but the Falcons then scored seven straight points to build a 56-47 margin.
Carleton's scoring drought lasted another minute, but once Engelberg removed the imaginary lid over the basket, the Knights heated up in a hurry. He drained triples on consecutive trips down the floor, and Averill's 3-pointer tied the score at 56-56 with 9:49 still to go. After another defensive stop, Carleton got the ball to Engelberg again, and he hit a long 3-pointer to give the Knights their first lead since the two-minute mark of the first half.
UWRF later knotted the score at 61-61 with 5:45 to play, but Engelberg had eight points during the Knights' 13-4 spurt that gave the visitors their largest lead of the contest at 74-65 with 3:13 to go. The Falcons got no closer than three points the remainder of the game.
Engelberg tallied 24 points in the second half, nearly matching his career high (25) coming into the day. He was 12-of-17 overall and 4-of-7 from beyond the arc.
This was Drake's second career game with 20-plus points, besting a 21-point effort against Bethel on Jan. 15, 2025.
Junior forward
Sam Koelling contributed his fourth career double-double, collecting 10 points and 11 rebounds with two blocked shots.
Reggie Postel had 18 points off the bench to lead UWRF. Jack Leifker added 17 points and Micah Thompson contributed 15 points.
Carleton shot 45.5 percent overall and made 10-of-27 triples (37.0 percent). UW-River Falls shot 49.2 percent but was 7-of-24 (29.2 percent) from deep.
