ST. PETER, Minn. – The Carleton volleyball team fell to Gustavus Adolphus in MIAC volleyball action Wednesday night at Gus Young Court. The Knights fell in straight sets, 25–22, 25–13, 25–22 to move to 4-16 (2-5 MIAC) on the season.
Carleton points throughout a tight opening set. The Knights erased an 10-7 deficit with a four-point surge led by Dixon at the service line to take an 11-10 lead. It was the last time they would lead in the set as the Gusties rattled off 10 of the next 13 points to open up a 20-14 advantage. Trailing 24-19, Carleton did all it could to extend the set with three straight points to bring the score within two (24–22), but the Gusties converted set point on a swing from Greta Tompkins to take the opening frame.
Gustavus jumped out 7–0 in the second set behind three aces from Maren Sundberg and never trailed. Senior Sylvia Dixon halted the run with a kill, and both Dixon and junior Kate Wiczynski added kills again late, but the Gusties' offense — 15 kills with just two errors — proved too efficient as Carleton fell 25–13.
The Knights regrouped and controlled much of set three. Trailing 10-6, Carleton went on an 8-3 run to take the lead (14-13) midway through the frame. The Knights led as late as 18–17, but Gustavus answered with a 6-1 spurt to regain the advantage (23-19). The difference proved to be too much for the visitors as finished off the set 25-22 to take the match.
Dixon led Carleton with a team-high nine kills, adding seven digs and an ace. Wiczynski finished with six kills, while first-year Sami Torresin notched five kills with a team-best three blocks. Junior setter Megan Smith totaled 24 assists and seven digs. First-year Angelina Erhardt paced the back row with 11 digs, and senior Ella Curtis-Revelle added nine.
