DULUTH, Minn. – The Carleton College football team had 570 yards of total offense on its way to a 41-14 victory at College of St. Scholastica. The Knights are now 4-0 in the MIAC and 4-1 overall.
"This was another great team win that included high execution by everyone," said Carleton head coach
Tom Journell. "The defense was lights out in the second half and getting stops when needed. The offense was balanced, and the kicking game was solid."
Carleton's ground game amassed a season-best 201 yards and three scores, including two rushing touchdowns by
Jaden Coleman, who had 80 yards on 12 carries.
Evan Olds totaled 55 yards rushing and a score on his dozen rushes. The first-year running back has now scored in all five of his collegiate games.
The Knights added 369 yards through the air, as senior quarterback
Jack Curtis was 38-of-47 for 338 yards and a score. He spread the ball around as four of his receivers had at least seven catches, each with a minimum of 70 yards. Leading the quartet was
James Alexander with 95 yards on eight receptions, both career highs, and a touchdown.
Rye Storrs totaled 77 yards on eight grabs, and
Jaxon Watson had 71 yards on seven catches. Meanwhile,
Tyler Dimond had eight receptions for 76 yards and one touchdown.
The Saints (2-3, 1-3 MIAC) scored on the fifth play of the game when Donald West connected with Curtis Favors for a 43-yard scoring play. The Knights answered with 24 consecutive points, scoring in a variety of ways. Their first drive covered 72 yards, culminating with a four-yard touchdown pass from Curtis to
Tyler Dimond. Midway through the second quarter, on a drive that began on their own nine-yard line, the Knights flipped the script, running a fake screen to Dimond that drew the defense and allowed the receiver-turned-passer to find Alexander all alone in the end zone for a 31-yard reception. This was Dimond's first passing touchdown of his career. Carleton added a 40-yard field goal by
Marcus Merkelbach and a 10-yard rushing touchdown by Coleman.
St. Scholastica closed the gap to 24-14 when West and Favors connected on a 21-yard touchdown with three seconds remaining in the second quarter.
On the opening drive of the third quarter, Curtis orchestrated a 77-yard drive that lasted over six minutes, ending with a four-yard rushing touchdown by Olds. The Saints' only possession of the quarter ended in a punt, and the Knights maintained possession for the remainder of the quarter.
The fourth quarter saw the Knights put the game out of reach thanks to a 25-yard Merkelbach field goal and Coleman's second rushing touchdown, this one a four-yard run to cap a 94-yard scoring drive that was the Knights' fifth scoring drive of at least 70 yards.
