Goetz and Harris propel Knights to win over Concordia

NORTHFIELD, Minn. – Spencer Goetz tallied a career-best 20 points and Luke Harris added 29 of his own — his 10th game this season with at least 20 points — as Carleton College men's basketball team secured a 93-84 victory over visiting Concordia College-Moorhead.

Carleton (10-6, 4-4 MIAC) led by as many as 10 points in an opening stanza that saw eight lead changes. With 10:47 remaining before half, the score sat knotted at 23-23 until the Knights rattled off 10 straight out of a timeout to take a 33-23 lead.

The margin was still double digits at the 6:31 mark, as the hosts held a 38-28 lead before the Cobbers (6-10, 2-5 MIAC) used an 8-0 burst to make it a one-possession game again. The Knights eventually carved out a 48-42 advantage heading into the locker room for intermission. Josh Engelberg led Carleton in scoring across the first 20 minutes with 10 points.

The Knights played from in front the entire second half. Carleton's lead was trimmed to 56-54 after Concordia forward Rowan Nelson converted an old-fashioned three-point play with 14:07 still to play, but Engleberg responded with an and-1 of his own on the next possession, sparking Carleton on a 19-6 run over the next six-plus minutes, earning the home team its largest lead of the afternoon at 75-60.

Harris's layup gave the Knights an 85-73 advantage with 3:15 remaining before Goetz and the Cobbers' Jacob Cook started trading baskets. Concordia inched within 87-81 with 1:29 to play, though the visitors would get no closer.

In addition to Harris and Goetz's 20-point efforts, the Knights saw scoring contributions from nearly every player to touch the floor, including 18 from Matt Drake and 13 from Engelberg.

Cook and Rowan Nelson led the Cobbers with 29 and 23, respectively. Cook also snagged 10 boards to earn a double-double.

The Knights shot a season-best 54.4 percent overall, including 9-of-17 (52.9 percent) from deep. The Cobbers connected on 50.8 percent of their attempts and were 11-of-27 (44.4 percent) from 3-point range. The Knights took care of business at the free throw line, hitting 22-of-27 attempts (81.5 percent) at the charity stripe compared to a 10-of-19 (52.6 percent) showing for Concordia.

Up Next for the Knights
Carleton plays its final non-conference game of the regular season as the Knights host Martin Luther College on Monday, January 20. Tipoff is set for 7:00 p.m.
