Bench goals help Knights to 3-1 win over Concordia-Moorhead

NORTHFIELD, Minn. – The Carleton College men's soccer team commanded its contest against the Concordia College-Moorhead, winning 3-1 after getting a pair of first-half goals from substitutes Dylan Fox-Arnold and Willan Shrock.

This was victory No. 299 in the career of Carleton head coach Bob Carlson, who is now 299-150-53 (.648) over 28 years (27 seasons) at the helm of the Knights' program.

The two teams played a taught first 35 minutes, with each side getting only one chance. In the 20th minute, Carleton's (4-1-3, 1-1-0 MIAC) Felix Shapiro found himself open from eight yards out but was denied by the legs of Concordia (1-7-0, 0-2-0 MIAC) goalkeeper Jensen Waltz. A minute later, Gannon Brooks latched onto a long ball and got one-on-one with Knights' goalie Leo Kugel, who made an excellent save to keep the scoreline nil-nil.

In the 37th minute, Jonathan Vonderlage sent a line-splitting ball for reserve Fox-Arnold, who rounded the keeper and scored his first goal of the season. Two minutes later, the Knights worked a brilliant goal at the top of the box, with some quick passes ending with a backheel from Briggs Priem to Shrock, who rolled the ball into the bottom corner for his first career goal.

Ben Pennell nearly scored in the final seconds of the first half, attempting to chip the netminder, but Waltz got a fingertip on it. Pennell totaled four shots in his first action of 2024.

The Knights dominated the first 15 minutes of the second half, but on a corner kick a pair of Knights knocked over a Cobber duo in the box, and the visitors were awarded a penalty kick. Brooks dispatched his PK, halving the deficit.

The visitors pushed to try and tie the game, but in the 80th minute, they gave the ball away to Owen Flanagan at the top of the box, and he scored a simple goal to ice the game.

Despite the penalty goal, Kugel still has not conceded from open play this year.

The Knights outshot the Cobbers 18-3 (8-2 in shots on goal) and held an 11-3 edge in corner kicks.

Up Next for the Knights
The team has a quick turnaround, as Carleton heads to Indianola, Iowa to face Simpson College on Sunday, Sept. 22. The game will kick off at 7:00 P.M.
