NORTHFIELD, Minn. – The Carleton Knights women's soccer team bested the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater 3-1 on Saturday at Bell Field. The Knights have begun the season 5-0-0 for the first time in program history.
After going 4-0-0 to start a campaign on three previous occasions (1982, 2000, and 2017), this marks the only time that Carleton has prevailed in each of its first five matches. The Knights enjoy a MIAC-best 16-3 (+13) overall goal differential this fall.
Carleton fired five shots in the opening ten minutes, and with the fifth
Hadley Twichell lashed into the bottom right corner from 22 yards for the opening goal, her second of the year. The game slowed down for the rest of the first stanza, with Carleton holding UW-Whitewater (1-3-1) to just two shots all half.
The second frame began with a flurry. Three goals were scored in the opening seven minutes, starting with
Lauren Caldwell taking down a ball at the top of the box and finishing neatly to double the Carleton lead.
Whitewater responded almost instantly, with Jenna Laidlaw scoring a fortuitous goal off a deflection only 48 seconds after Caldwell's tally. It took just 139 more seconds, however, for
Kat Kresse to continue her scorching start to the season with a brilliant goal, curling a shot just under the bar from 25 yards. She has scored in a career-high five straight games and has scored seven goals over this stretch.
Caldwell led the Knights with five shots, and
Dylan Baker added an assist on Kresse's goal.
Avery Trapp made two saves in goal.
Carleton concluded the contest with a 19-5 edge in shots (11-3 on goal), as well as taking 13 corners to Whitewater's one.
