ST. PETER, Minn. – The Carleton College men's tennis team lost 8-1 at No. 13-ranked Gustavus Adolphus College. The result knocked the Knights from their perch atop the MIAC standings with a week remaining in the regular season.
"This was one of those matches where the final score did not reflect the incredible high quality of tennis," said Carleton head coach
Stephan Zweifel. "Very proud of the way we battled today, and looking forward to a possible rematch in the conference tournament."
Gustavus (19-8, 7-0 MIAC) grabbed an early lead with an 8-2 win at No 3 doubles and an 8-4 triumph at No. 1 doubles by the seventh-ranked tandem in the Central Region. The Knights (12-5, 7-1 MIAC) got one of those team points back as
Aniketh Vipparla and
Zach Leslie notched an 8-6 victory at the second slot.
The Gusties won all six singles matches in straight sets. The best contest of the day came at No. 6 singles where
Jack Rivkin and Gustavus' Caleb Fridinger locked up in a tight tussle with the Gustie senior eventually prevailing, 7-6, 6-4, to snap Rivkin's 7-match win streak.
Marco Siviero, the No. 12-ranked singles player in the region, defeated
Yuv Kataria atop the lineup 6-0, 6-2.
Baiyun Jing saw his win streak stopped with a 6-3, 6-2 loss to Josh Christensen at No. 2 singles.
Jasper Yang saw his unblemished No. 3 singles record dirtied by a 6-4, 6-4 setback.
Vipparla dropped a 6-2, 6-2 match at the fifth slot, and
Jerome Yang lost at No. 5 singles by a 6-1, 6-0 margin.
