Big fourth quarter not enough in Knights' loss to Martin Luther

NEW ULM, Minn. – Despite a big second-half rally, the Carleton College women's basketball team came up short against Martin Luther College, losing 63-57 despite outscoring their foes 38-25 over the final 20 minutes. Addy Huss notched her first collegiate double-double, thanks to 25 points and 13 rebounds, both of which were season highs for the Knights.

It was a tale of two halves. Martin Luther (6-2) sprinted to a 14-2 lead owned a 16-6 advantage after the first quarter as the Carleton (1-9) offense started the game 2-of-12. The Knights made nearly half their shots in the second quarter but still faced a 38-19 deficit at intermission.

"Down 19 at the half, the response from this young team could not have been better," said Carleton head coach Tammy Metcalf-Filzen. "They are relentless with their effort and commitment to their teammates. I am extremely proud of them for weathering the first part of the season as they have and look forward to what we are able to accomplish in the new year."

Carleton bit into the lead after the break, carding a 7-0 run in the middle of the third quarter and out-scored Martiin Luther 15-11 in the period. The visitors caught fire in the fourth quarter, scoring 23 points, their highest output in any period this season. Huss scored 13 of her 25 points in the final quarter.

Huss finished the game 9-of-16 from the field and 6-of-7 at the line. She added four assists, tying Carleton's season high. Selma Vangstein was the other Knight in double figures with 10 points, though Liesl McCallum contributed nine points and four rebounds.

Carleton outshot Martin Luther on the game, hitting 36.4 percent of its shots on the day to Martin Luther's 33.3 percent. Carleton went 6-for-26 (23.1 percent) from deep, and Martin Luther concluded at 9-for-33 (27.3 percent) from 3-point range. The difference was on the glass, where the home team won the rebound battle, 45-33, over Carleton.

Emma Dorn led Martin Luther with 16 points and eight rebounds. Mya Morris was the only other player in double digits with 14 points, adding six assists.
