NORTHFIELD, Minn. – The Carleton College football team concluded the 2024 campaign with a 21-9 victory over visiting Hamline University on Saturday.
"Another great team win today," said Carleton head coach
Tom Journell. "I'm so proud of our seniors. With 26 wins in their career, they are the second-winningest group of seniors in the 140-year history of Carleton College Football. Their leadership, work ethic, and dedication is a standard for classes to come."
The Knights had three consecutive 7-3 seasons before wrapping up this year with a 5-5 ledger (4-4 MIAC). This group of seniors owns a 26-14 (.650) record, second only to the Class of 1990 that went 27-13 during the 1986-89 campaigns.
Hamline (3-7, 1-7 MIAC) received the opening kickoff and took nearly seven minutes off the clock before Durham Welch kicked a 25-yard field goal to give the Pipers an early 3-0 advantage.
Midway through the second quarter, Carleton put together a 97-yard touchdown drive capped by a 41-yard touchdown connection between quarterback
Jack Curtis and wide receiver
Tyler Dimond. This was the first of 21 unanswered points for the Knights, as they took a 7-3 lead with 4:20 to play before the break.
After a quick 3-and-out, the Knights marched back down the field and added a 21-yard touchdown pass from Curtis to
Nathan Streiff with only 0:02 showing on the clock before halftime.
Despite turning it over on downs in the red zone twice to start the second half, the Knights found themselves in position to score on their third possession of the third quarter. A 27-yard gain by
Ntense Obono put the Knights on the 10-yard line. Two plays later,
Max Jones scored his first career touchdown on a seven-yard rush up the middle, giving the Knights a 21-3 advantage with 3:42 left in the third.
The Knights defense stayed strong, holding the Pipers to two Welch field goals—from 19 and 45 yards—the rest of the way.
On a very windy afternoon at Laird Stadium, the Knights still had a strong passing attack. Curtis was 30-for-40 for 316 passing yards and two touchdowns, giving him 22 scoring strikes this season, sixth-most in team annals, and 54 TD passes for his career, second-best in program history. The junior signal caller now has 5,479 passing yards over his first three seasons, moving Curtis into second place on the Knights' all-time passing chart. He amassed 2,322 passing yards this season, third-best in team history (see charts below).
Dimond was the Knights' leading receiver with 11 receptions for 150 yards, finishing the season with 989 receiving yards, the sixth-highest total in school history. Today's touchdown was the 12th of his season—tied for third in team history—and the 20th of his career to rank eighth all-time. His 64 catches this season were one off Obono's team-leading total. Dimond now has 1,563 career receiving yards (see charts below).
Obono hauled in nine passes for 93 yards and now has 214 career receptions for 1,908 yards and 26 touchdowns, good for second, eighth, and tied for third all-time, respectively, in program annals. His 65 catches this year marks the ninth-highest single-season total in team history.
Streiff had five grabs for 38 yards and a score. He totaled 155 career receptions for 1,727 yards and 22 touchdowns. Those figures rank eighth, 10th, and tied for sixth, respectively, in team history (see charts below).
Defensively,
Henry Detmer led all Knights with nine tackles and a forced fumble. His 83 tackles ranked fourth in the MIAC this season, while his 51 solo stops ranked third.
Kevin Xiong had five tackles for loss, including 2.0 sacks.
Jackson Reade snagged two interceptions on the afternoon, the first Knight to do so since Oct. 30, 2021.
Hamline quarterback Alejandro Villanueva passed for 237 yards with Dawson Schaffer pulling in nine passes for 139 yards.
