ST. PAUL, Minn. – The Carleton College and St. Catherine University women's soccer teams played to a 1-1 draw in a clash between the top two teams in the MIAC standings.
Carleton (10-1-3, 5-0-2 MIAC) grabbed the lead with a first-half goal by
Dylan Baker only to see the Wildcats (7-2-3, 4-0-2 MIAC) get the equalizer from Ari Green early in the second stanza.
These two programs have met in the last two MIAC Playoff Championships, and this one was just as tense. St. Catherine finished with a 16-11 edge in shots but held only a 6-5 advantage in shots on goal.
Piper Dean had the first true scoring chance for either side, but her 14th-minute attempt slipped just outside the right post.
In the 28th minute, Baker pulled down a long pass from
Mia Anzalone, pushed the ball wide for
Hadley Twichell, who dribbled up left wing before passing back across the top of the 18-yard box. Baker took a touch and fired a shot beyond outstretched arms of All-Region goalkeeper Kate Praetz and inside left post.
St. Catherine attempted the final five shots of the opening period but none were on frame.
The hosts got the equalizer in the 52nd minute. A long service attempt by the Wildcats was headed by a Carleton defender and went forward for Claire Cater, who had been in an offside position. Because the ball came in off a deliberate touch of the defense, the assistant referee's flag came back down and play continued. Cater sent a pass toward the back post, which Green finished with an acrobatic shot.
Avery Trapp finished with five saves, including a pair of late-game stops to keep the contest knotted at 1-1. She leapt for finger-tip save of 30-yard shot in 75th minute and dove to make another crucial stop in the 87th minute.
Praetz was credited with four stops
