ARDEN HILLS, Minn. – The No. 11-ranked Carleton College men's soccer team remains unbeaten after registering a 2-0 triumph at Bethel University.
The Knights (9-0-0, 3-0-0 MIAC) avenged last season's playoff loss to the Royals (3-3-0, 1-2-0 MIAC), netting a first-half goal from
Ben Pennell and a late insurance tally by
Hays Turner.
In the 34th minute, Pennell tallied what is likely to be his easiest goal of the season. Carleton center back
Xander Grosse hit a long ball over the Bethel defense. Royal goalkeeper Juan Valdivia Cortes came off his line in anticipation of collecting the bounding ball. At the same time, one of the Royal defenders headed the ball towards the goal line, presumably thinking Vladivia Cortes would be there. The headed ball went over the goalie, and Pennell ran around everyone to tap the ball across the line for his sixth goal of the season, tying him for the team lead.
The score remained 1-0 until Turner cleaned up a rebound in the 89th minute for his first collegiate goal.
Briggs Priem was credited with the assist.
Carleton goalkeeper
Daniel Linder collected four saves, securing his fifth clean sheet of the season and the Knights' eighth consecutive shutout.
The Carleton defense has not conceded a goal since the season opener vs. Northland College. Since then, the opposition has gone 769 minutes and 58 seconds without a goal, the third longest scoreless streak in recorded team history (see chart below).
At 9-0-0, Carleton has already surpassed last season's win total (8-7-3). This is the second-longest win streak in program history, trailing only a 12-gamer from Sept 19-Oct. 25, 2009.
Up Next for the Knights
Carleton hosts St. Olaf College in a rivalry clash. The teams will play at 4:00 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 26.
