MOORHEAD, Minn. –
Briggs Priem and
Matvei Kehkekian both scored twice as the Carleton College men's soccer team tied the school record for goals in a game during its 10-0 victory at Concordia College. With six consecutive victories to start the year, the Knights are off to the best start in program history.
This is the most goals Carleton (6-0-0, 2-0-0 MIAC) has ever scored in a MIAC contest and marks the fifth time in recorded program history that the Knights have scored 10 times (see chart below). The last of those instances came exactly five years ago at Viterbo University.
Carleton has now scored at least five goals in three of its six matches this season and has out-scored its opponents 26-1 on the year, the largest goal differential in NCAA Division III men's soccer this season.
Priem now has six career goals, with three of those coming at Concordia-Moorhead. He broke the scoring open in the 29th minute, heading home a perfect cross by
Ben Pennell.
The Knights took a 2-0 lead into the break after
Justin Crawmer scored for the first time this season and sixth time in his career, finding the back of the net in the 43rd minute.
Hays Turner carried the ball into the box from the left wing and slid a well-time ball towards the edge of the six-yard box, allowing Crawmer to run onto it and slot a shot inside the far post.
Not even two minutes into the second half,
Owen Flanagan put his name in the scorebook, hammering home his 11th career goal, this one from the top of the 18-yard box.
Collin Kroll was credited with the assist.
The fourth goal came transition during the 52nd minute. Priem fed the ball to
Jonathan Vonderlage, who was unmarked on the left wing for a 17-yard shot that curled around the goalkeeper before sneaking inside the right post.
Preim's second goal came only four minutes later, when he headed home a long free kick by
Alexander Grosse, giving Carleton a 5-0 lead.
In the 60th minute, a Concordia player was fouled in the box, but Carleton goalkeeper
Daniel Linder saved the ensuing penalty kick to keep the clean sheet intact.
The Knights matched the season high for goals scored with another tally in the 68th minute.
Dylan Fox-Arnold was first to a ball lobbed over the Concordia backline, then fed the ball in front for
Will Vonderlage to tap home his first career goal.
Carleton capitalized on a 74th minute turnover for its seventh goal. After a mis-touch by a Concordia player,
Jon Fernades scooped up the loose ball, looped around a defender, and fed a pass to the back post where
Luke Brown volleyed home a shot, accounting for his first career goal.
In the 79th minute,
Luke Wharton chipped a pass over the Cobber backline, and
Nick Lattal converted his first goal. Less than a minute later,
Matvei Keshkekian fought off contact from a defender, took a touch around the keeper, and became the fourth Knight to score his first collegiate goal.
Keshkekian completed his brace in the 87th minute, again withstanding contact with a defender before beating the goalie inside the near post.
Carleton finished the contest with a 24-4 advantage in shot attempts. Linder and
Leo Kugel combined on Carleton's fifth shutout of the season.
