Knights soar past Falcons, 5-0, in first round of NCAA Championships

CHICAGO, Ill. --- The Carleton College women's tennis team opened the first round of the NCAA Championships with a 5-0 victory over Concordia University Wisconsin. Mary Hose (Jr./Columbia, Mo./Rock Bridge) contributed to a win in doubles and secured the clinching team point with her straight-sets victory at No. 2 singles.

The Knights improve to 21-0 this season, marking the program's second-highest win total over the last 35 years (see chart below). Carleton will face No. 36-ranked University of Wisconsin-Whitewater (14-4) in the second round. The Falcons conclude their season with a 16-7 record.

Mariam Nechiporuk (So./Portland, Ore./Lake Oswego) and Ingrid Smith (So./Edina, Minn./Edina) continued their domination at No. 2 doubles, improving to 15-0 this season with an 8-0 triumph.

Hose and Amelia Asfaw (So./Seattle, Wash./Seattle Prep) notched their 12th win of the season at No. 1 doubles, prevailing by an 8-2 tally.

Amanda Black (So./Libertyville, Ill./Libertyville) and Alise Pedersen (Sr./San Anselmo, Calif./The Branson School) completed the doubles sweep with an 8-4 victory at the third slot.

Once singles play began, it was all Carleton. The Knights claimed the opening set in each match, and it quickly became a race to see who would register the final two team points.

Zoe Rose (So./Tacoma, Wash./Charles Wright Academy) pushed Carleton toward the finish line and improved to 15-1 on the season with her 6-1, 6-0 win at No. 6 singles.

Hose followed with a 6-2, 6-0 win over Ashley Samuta at No. 2 singles. This was the 12th consecutive victory for the Carleton junior.

When play was halted, Miriam Shteyman (So./Plymouth, Minn./Wayzata) held a 6-2, 4-1 advantage at No. 4 singles, and Smith led 6-2, 5-0 at No. 5 singles. Asfaw and Nechiporuk won the opening sets at No. 1 and No. 3 singles, respectively, and were early in the second set when the team result was determined.
