Knights breeze past Macalester, 8-1

NORTHFIELD, Minn. – The Carleton College women's tennis team continued its winning ways with an 8-1 victory over visiting Macalester College on Friday. The Knights improved to 16-0 on the season and 8-0 in MIAC matches.

Amelia Asfaw (So./Seattle, Wash./Seattle Prep), Mary Hose (Jr./Columbia, Mo./Rock Bridge), Mariam Nechiporuk (So./Portland, Ore./Lake Oswego), and Ingrid Smith (So./Edina, Minn./Edina) each won in both singles and doubles.

The day began with Carleton winning two of three in doubles play. Asfaw and Hose prevailed by an 8-6 margin atop the lineup, winning for the eighth time in nine contests. Meanwhile, Nechiporuk and Smith smashed their opponents at No. 2 doubles by an 8-0 tally and moved to 10-0 as a tandem this season. Macalester (9-5, 5-2 MIAC) picked up its lone team point with an 8-6 victory at the third slot.

Carleton won the top four singles matches in convincing fashion. Asfaw prevailed 6-1, 6-2 at No. 1 singles, and is now 10-1 on the season. Hose captured her seventh consecutive victory with a 6-1, 6-1 result at the second spot. Nechiporuk improved to 12-0 this season after notching a 6-2, 6-1 win at No. 3 singles, and Miriam Shteyman (So./Plymouth, Minn./Wayzata) cruised to a 6-0, 6-2 triumph at the fourth slot, good for her seventh consecutive victory.

Smith rallied from a set down to secure her 2-6, 6-2, 1-0 (10-6) victory at No. 5 singles, improving her season ledger to 11-1, while Alise Pedersen (Sr./San Anselmo, Calif./The Branson School) remains undefeated in singles play this year (5-0) after contributing a 6-3, 7-5 triumph at the No. 6 spot.

Up Next for the Knights
Carleton is slated to host Gustavus Adolphus College on Saturday, April 22 in a matchup of the last two teams to be undefeated against MIAC competition. Last spring, the Knights lost 5-4 to the Gusties during the regular season but avenged that last with a 5-1 triumph in the finals of the MIAC Playoffs.
