ST. JOSEPH, Minn. – The Carleton College women's basketball team opened its season-ending four-game road trip with a 62-55 setback at College of Saint Benedict.
Jasmine Choi (Jr./Maple Grove, Minn./Osseo) paced the Knights with a season high-tying 22 points, the third consecutive game in which she achieved that total.
Carleton (7-4, 6-13 MIAC) jumped out a 7-0 lead, but Saint Benedict (15-7, 12-7 MIAC) answered with an 18-3 run and held an 18-12 lead by the end of the first quarter.
A pair of 3-pointers by
Amelia Solt (Fy./Loveland, Colo./Thompson Valley) and another from
Aiana Whitfield (Sr./Richfield, Minn./Benilde St.-Margaret's) during the second quarter helped Carleton gain some momentum as the Knights outscored the Bennies 15-13 in the period and headed into halftime down only four at 31-27. Saint Benedict feasted on Carleton miscues and held a 15-2 edge in points off turnovers over the first 20 minutes.
The Knights started the third quarter with a 9-2 spurt, including a 3-pointer from
Jasmine Maldonado (Fy./Holyoke, Mass./Northfield Mount Hermon) that brought Carleton within 33-32. Choi followed with back-to-back layups, pushing the Knights in front, 36-33. The Bennies finished the period on a 12-2 run and owned a 45-38 lead heading into the final 10 minutes.
A Solt 3-pointer on Carleton's first possession of the fourth quarter looked to give the visitors a spark, but each Carleton score seemingly saw a response from the Bennies, who retained at least a 3-point lead throughout the final period.
Choi was 9-of-14 from the floor and 4-of-4 at the line to continue her scoring streak.
Emma Henry (Jr./Prior Lake, Minn./Academy of Holy Angels) also finished in double digits with 10 points, with Solt chipping in nine points. Whitfield had a season-high six steals.
Carla Meyer led Saint Benedict with 22 points, while Sophie Jonas contributed 13 points. The Knights shot 44 percent overall and held the Bennies to 38 percent shooting in the game.
