MINNEAPOLIS – Six Knights finished in double figures as the Carleton College men's basketball team pulled away from host Augsburg University for a 93-64 victory.
John Carragher and
Miles Frisch each had 10 points off the bench to aid the Knights' balanced attack, with the former establishing a new career high and the latter matching his career best.
Carleton (4-3, 2-2 MIAC) shot 50.6 percent overall, including a season-best 46.2 percent (12-of-26) from beyond the arc on the way to its highest point total since a 99-91 victory over Bethany Lutheran on Dec. 30, 2022.
Matt Banovetz tallied game-highs of 19 points and eight rebounds to go along with five assists, two steals, and two blocks.
Alex Gibbens accounted for a season-high 15 points, all of them coming in the first half.
Sam Koelling matched his career-best with a 13-point effort in addition to seven rebounds and four blocks.
Luke Harris was the other Knight in double digits, finishing with 11 points, six boards, and a half-dozen assists.
Chuck Sweat nearly joined that group as he added nine points off the bench.
Carleton trailed 6-2 three minutes into the game, but with Gibbens leading the way, the Knights put together a 31-8 run and built a 19-point margin with 8:27 left in the opening half. Soon after, Augsburg (3-5, 1-4 MIAC) used a 12-0 run to close the gap to seven points and eventually trailed 43-33 at intermission.
Any hopes the Auggies had of a further comeback were squashed when Carleton began the second half with a 20-6 run. Banovetz accounted for 11 points during that surge. The visitors led by at least 22 points the remainder of the contest, widening the gap to 32 points on several occasions.
The Knights posted a 46-31 advantage on the glass, including 16 offensive rebounds which led to a 20-3 edge in second-chance points. Interestingly, Carleton only attempted four free throws in the game.
Carleton limited Augsburg to 37.7 percent shooting from the field and 25.0 percent from 3-point range. Jalen Dearring had 17 points to pace the Auggies, who received 14 points from Colin Meade and 13 points off the bench from Elias Batala.
