ST. JOSEPH, Minn. – The Carleton College women's soccer team played the College of Saint Benedict to a 0-0 draw in the regular-season finale for both squads. The tie gave the Knights (15-1-2, 9-0-2 MIAC)—who closed out their second consecutive undefeated conference campaign—another point in the standings, which was enough to give them sole possession of the MIAC's regular season crown for the second season in a row.
The Knights finished with 29 standings point, one more than runner-up St. Catherine University (14-3-1. 9-1-1 MIAC).
This was Carleton's fifth overall MIAC regular season title, and first time with back-to-back titles since 2010-11. The 1982, 2010, 2022, and now 2023 seasons concluded with solo crowns, with the Knights sharing the 2011 MIAC title with Saint Benedict. Carleton's 15 wins so far this season is tied for second most in program history (see chart below).
Carleton's pair of seniors threatened early, with
Casey MacVeagh cutting across the edge of the box and shooting low, drawing a diving save from Saint Benedict goalkeeper Annie Waters.
Cate Patterson followed, swerving through a couple of defenders before cracking another shot on frame, which was saved once again.
The first half concluded scoreless, with Carleton attempting 12 shots compared to two for the Bennies (9-5-3, 6-3-2 MIAC).
In the 62nd minute, the Bennies authored a dangerous counterattack, with winger Abby Willenbring springing free on the left side. Carleton keeper
Avery Trapp came out to challenge, and Willenbring's chip attempt missed wide. Seven minutes passed and Saint Benedict surged forward again, this time through center-forward Alli Voss, who broke through the Carleton defensive line, getting one-on-one with Trapp. Carleton's first-year goalie came off her line and made a point-blank save to maintain the clean sheet.
The two sides mostly shot from outside the box for the majority of the match as they were unable to cut through each other's defensive lines for touches in the box. Carleton ended the game with an 18-15 edge in shots taken, including 8-4 in shots on goal. Patterson was the most active Knight in the offensive third, taking five shots with three of those on goal. Voss and Willenbring had three attempts each to pace the hosts.
Trapp made four saves to notch her sixth solo clean sheet. This was Carleton's 11th team shutout of the season.
En route to back-to-back MIAC crowns, the Knights have gone 17-0-5 during regular-season MIAC contests
