Knights roll plast Hamline, 5-0, and secure first-round bye in MIAC Playoffs

ST. PAUL, Minn. – Casey MacVeagh had two goals and two assists to help the Carleton College women's soccer team claim a 5-0 road victory over Hamline University and lock up a first-round bye in the upcoming MIAC Playoffs.

The Knights improved to 12-1-1 overall and 8-0-1 against conference opponents. The defending MIAC regular-season champions currently sit atop the conference standings with 25 points, followed by St. Catherine University at 21 points, but the Wildcats have three conference games remaining compared to only two for Carleton.

With her big day on offense, MacVeagh moved into a tie for ninth place on Carleton's career scoring list (19 goals). She is now tied for third with 14 career assists and eighth with 52 career points (see charts below).

"Hamline is an organized, well-coached team," said Carleton head coach Jessica Mueller. "They are hard to play through. We stayed patient on the ball and were able to expose the space behind their back line. Our seniors shined and really set the tone on and off the ball from start to finish."

Carleton opened the scoring early just over three minutes into the game. A through ball by Thea Traw squeezed its way through the entire Hamline team (1-11-1, 0-7-1 MIAC). MacVeagh ran onto the ball and after a couple dribbles, powered a one-on-one chance to the right of the goalie.

MacVeagh finished her brace 15 minutes later off an assist by Zaraya Jordan. The Carleton defender dribbled from the right back position to the top of the box, where she laid it off to MacVeagh, who after a neat first touch into space finished again to the right of the goalie.

In the 31st minute, the Knights had a goal called back due to a player being offside. Shortly after the restart, Ashlyn Haigh came up from the midfield to dispossess a Hamline player. She subsequently went around another defender and took a dribbling shot that rolled past the goalie. It was Haigh's sixth goal of the season, tying her for the team lead.

Carleton continued the scoring 15 minutes into the second half, when Lauren Caldwell played a ball up the left side to MacVeagh, whose long cross went across the length of the box to find an open Cate Patterson, who easily scored across goal. It was Patterson's 20th career goal, eighth-most in recorded team history.

Barely a minute later, Kathryn Kresse found MacVeagh, who this time played a through ball down the right side to Caldwell, who finished the fifth goal for the Knights.

The large lead allowed Carleton to rotate additional players onto the field. A total of 23 players saw game action, with 18 playing for at least 30 minutes.

Up Next for the Knights
Carleton returns home to Bell Field on Monday, October 16 to take on University of Wisconsin-River Falls in a non-conference contest. The game will kick off at 3:30 p.m.
