Knights unable to withstand passing prowess of No. 8 Saint John’s

COLLEGEVILLE, Minn. – The Carleton College football team (5-1, 3-1 MIAC) absorbed its first loss of the season, falling 63-7 at No. 8-ranked Saint John's University. Despite an interception by Owen Detmer and a forced fumble by Cooper Long, the Knights were unable to find an answer to the Johnnies' potent passing attack.

Carleton forced Saint John's (5-1, 4-0 MIAC) to go three-and-out on the Johnnies' first possession, but the home team got on track with three straight touchdown drives before the first quarter concluded.

Carleton found the end zone early in the second quarter as the Knights' offense put together a 12-play drive that covered 75-yards. Ntense Obono had five receptions on the drive including a 20-yard touchdown pass from Jack Curtis, making the score 21-7 with 14:19 to go in the first half.

After stopping the Johnnies on the next possession, the Knights had an opportunity to bring the game back within one score. However, Saint John's intercepted a pass on the third play of the drive and went onto score only two plays later.

From there, the Johnnies passing attack kept rolling, and the Carleton defense had no answer for it. Saint John's quarterback Aaron Syverson finished the day 31-of-42 for 448 yards and six touchdowns. His main target was receiver Dylan Wheeler who finished off with 14 receptions, 205 yards and three touchdowns.

Curtis went 16-of-27 with 104 passing yards and the touchdown. Backup quarterback Nick Toole was 4-of-10 with 25 yards in limited action.

Obono finished the day with eight catches for 59 yards and the 19th touchdown reception of his career, breaking a tie with Mack Journell for sixth place in recorded Carleton history.

Defensively, the Knights were led by Eric Lail's eight-tackle effort. Henry Detmer, Cooper Long, and Isaac Simons tallied six stops of their own.
