NORTHFIELD, Minn. –
Luke Harris had a game-high 17 points as Carleton College moved into a tie atop the MIAC standings with a 70-63 victory over visiting Concordia-College Moorhead.
After a frigid shooting performance saw the Knights trailing 29-26 at halftime, the Knights (10-1, 5-1 MIAC) shot 71.4 percent in the second half in notching their sixth consecutive victory.
"That was a really nice win for our team tonight," said Carleton head coach
Ryan Kershaw. "It was a very different game stylistically compared to our last game out versus Bethany Lutheran. The guys made some good adjustments in the second half offensively, and we were able to string a few stops together to get the lead down the stretch."
While Carleton was cold then hot at the offensive end, Concordia (5-7, 3-4 MIAC) was consistent with its offensive efficiency, shooting 40.7 percent in the first half and 40.6 percent in the second half. The Cobbers went 7-of-19 (37 percent) overall from beyond the arc.
One game after tying the school record with 18 made 3-pointers, Carleton shot only 33 percent in the first half, including 2-of-14 (14 percent) from beyond the arc. Regrouping during intermission, the Knights made 15-of-21 shots over the final 20 minutes, including 5-of-8 (63 percent) from 3-point range. The hosts finished at 49 percent shooting for the game with a 7-of-22 showing beyond the arc.
Beck Page was a big part of the second-half turnaround for Carleton, as he hit 3-pointers on three consecutive possessions midway through the second half. That long-range attack sparked a 14-7 run for the hosts, turning a 45-41 deficit into a 55-52 lead. The Knights would not trail the remainder of the contest.
With Carleton clinging to a 55-54 lead and the shot clock about to expire,
Spencer Goetz battled for a loose ball and hit a shot with one knee on the floor, providing crucial points in a tight game that saw the Knights lead by no more than four points until the closing seconds.
After Concordia pulled to within 64-63, the Knights put the ball in the hands of
Jeremy Beckler, who capped his 16-point effort with a baseline fadeaway jumper at the 2:17 mark. That proved to be the final bucket for either team as Carleton held the Cobbers scoreless down the homestretch and Harris and
Matt Banovetz both hit a pair of free throws to seal the victory.
Dylan Inniger and Matthew Johnson had 13 points apiece to pace Concordia. Jackson Jangula (12 points) and Rowan Nelson (10 points) also finished in double figures for the Cobbers.
