NORTHFIELD, Minn. - Despite a career-tying seven three-pointers from
Beck Page (Sr./Longmont, Colo./Longmont), the Carleton College men's basketball team saw its three-game win streak snapped by visiting Gustavus Adolphus College, 78-75.
Â
Turnovers doomed the Knights (14-3, 9-3 MIAC) as they gave the ball away 18 times, leading the Gusties (7-10, 7-5 MIAC) to build an 18-0 margin in points off turnovers. Carleton did not score following any of Gustavus' 10 giveaways throughout the contest.
Â
The conference tilt began as expected, with fast-paced play and a slew of scoring. The Knights' number-one scoring offense in the MIAC burned just a bit hotter, and the home side was enjoying a 12-point lead exactly midway through the opening period after
Alex Gibbens (Jr./New Canaan, Conn./New Canaan) found
Jeremy Beckler (Sr./Lino Lakes, Minn./White Bear Lake) down low to bring the score to 26-14.
Â
The Gusties, who score the most points in conference play, would not be turned away, knotting the game at 36 with 4:10 to play. Page's fourth triple of the half gave the lead back to Carleton, and the home team would eventually carry a 43-42 edge into halftime.
Â
While the Gusties knocked at the door throughout the second half, the Knights did not relinquish the lead until there was only 6:05 on the clock, when Jordan Schommer hit a reverse layup. Gustavus Adolphus looked to have the game sealed when a pair of Schommer free throws extended to lead to 75-68 with less than 30 seconds remaining, but
Luke Harris (So./Piedmont, Calif./Piedmont) converted a traditional 3-point play to give Carleton new live.
Â
Evan Wieker went one-for-two at the charity stripe, and the Knights got the ball quickly to Page, who knocked down his seventh trey of the afternoon to set the score at 76-74 with 13 seconds to play. That was the closest the Knights would get, as Spencer Swanson knocked down two more free throws to ice the game.
Â
Swanson finished with 20 points and 10 rebounds for the visitors, and was joined in double figures by four teammates.
Â
Five Knights also scored at least 10 points, as Page led all scorers with 21 points off the bench.
Spencer Goetz (So./Chaska, Minn./Chaska) was the lone Knights' starter not in double-figures but had one of the better games of his season, pulling down five boards, dishing a pair of assists, and swiping four steals, one shy of his season high. Gibbens matched a career-best with seven assists to go along with 12 points and a share of the team lead in rebounds with six.
Â
Page's seven 3-pointers tie both the Knights' season high – originally established by
Matt Banovetz (Jr./Minneapolis, Minn./Academy of Holy Angels) on Dec 30 against Bethany Lutheran – as well as his personal career record, when he went 7-of-8 from deep at Concordia-Moorhead during the 2021-22 campaign. Those performances are tied for sixth in recorded team history (see list below).
Â
As a team, the Knights converted on 14 deep-balls, tying the 10
th-highest single-game total in recorded program history (see list below).
Â
Up Next for the Knights
Carleton stays at home for a mid-week contest against an Augsburg University squad riding a two-game win streak. Tipoff at West Gym is slated for 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday, Jan 25.
