Knights battle, fall to UW-River Falls in three sets

River Falls, Wis. – The Carleton volleyball team continued non-conference play on Wednesday night, falling to UW-River Falls in three sets.  Carleton drops to 1-3 on the season, while the Falcons remain unbeaten on the year.

The opening set proved to be a set of runs on Wednesday night.  Tied 2-2 in the early going, UW-River Falls scored five straight points to jump out to a 7-2 lead.  The Knights responded well, scoring three straight to cut the lead to just two points (7-5) and regain some of the momentum.  However, a 6-0 run for the Falcons gave them a 13-5 advantage, a deficit that proved to be too much for Carleton to overcome in the opening set, eventually falling 25-14.

The momentum began to shift in Carleton's favor.  The Knights jumped out to a 6-3 lead to open the second frame, thanks to a pair of kills and an ace from junior Annelise Sokolow (Jr./Draper, Utah/Juan Diego Catholic).  Points went back-and-forth, eventually leading to a 9-8 advantage for Carleton.

At that point, back-to-back kills from Kameri Meredith sparked what would turn out to be an 8-0 run and give the Falcons a 16-9 lead.  Carleton responded with three straight points to close the gap to four points (16-12), but it was as close as the Knights would get on the way to a 25-16 defeat in the second set.

UW-River Falls opened the third set with the first three points, but the Knights battled back to eventually tie the set at seven points apiece.  The Falcons scored the next four points to open up an 11-7 lead, but the Knights continued to battle.  Trailing 17-12, Carleton used an 8-3 run to tie the set 20-20, but UW-River Falls finished the scoring from there, recording the final five points of the set and stamping the match final.

Carleton was led by Annelise Sokolow with nine kills, while Jancyn Appel (Sr../Kansas City, Mo./The Pembroke Hill School) collected four kills and was a part of four blocks.  Sylvia Dixon (Fy./Vienna, Va./James Madison) also registered four kills to go along with a team-high seven digs, and Isabel Macia (Fy./Coral Gables, Fla./Divine Savior Academy) tallied 15 assists.

Up Next for the Knights
Carleton now has a week to prepare for its home opener, a 7pm showdown in West Gym with Martin Luther College on Wednesday, Sept. 14 before heading into conference play at the St. Scholastica Triangular on Saturday, Sept. 17.
