NORTHFIELD, Minn. – The Carleton volleyball team opened with a first set win, but eventually fell to St. Catherine University in four sets at home on Wednesday night at West Gym. The loss leaves the Knights with an overall record 1-7 (0-2 MIAC), while the Wildcats improve to 9-3 (1-0 MIAC).
The first set opened up with the teams trading points back and forth, keeping the teams within arm's length of each other until late in the set. The Knights pulled away after a service error by the Wildcats followed by a kill from
Kerrigan Candra (So./Joliet, Ill./Plainfield Central) to put them up 22-17. Another kill by Candra put gave Carleton a 24-19 lead, and the set wrapped up on an error from the other side, giving the Blue and Gold the set 25-19.
Momentum shifted in the second set. The Wildcats built themselves a significant lead early, going up 8-2 over the Knights. They continued to put on the pressure, and remained ahead late (24-15). With energy from the fans, the Blue and Gold battled, going on a run that started with a kill from
Sylvia Dixon (Fy./Vienna, Va./James Madison). They were able to climb back to within five points, but a final kill from St. Catherine finalized the score at 25-19 for the opposition.
In the third set, Carleton fell behind early again (6-2). The Knights trailed for much of the set, but a run late, including kills from Dixon and
Jancyn Appel (Sr./Kansas City, Mo./The Pembroke Hill School), got them within a point (18-17). But St. Catherine returned with its own run and found its way to a 24-20 lead that the Knights could not overcome. A final kill gave the Wildcats the set 25-20 and a 2-1 lead in the match.
Hoping to come back in the fourth set, Carleton came out strong, going up 13-7 and remaining on top for a good part of the frame. A run from St. Kate's, however, brought the game back to a tie at 18-18, and the momentum remained on the other side of the net. The Knights couldn't take the lead back despite good efforts, and a kill from St. Catherine finished off the set 25-21, taking the match 3-1.
Standouts from the match include
Annelise Sokolow (Jr./Draper, Utah/Juan Diego Catholic) who lead the team with 12 kills, and
