Knights play No. 24 Wartburg to a 1-1 draw

WAVERLY, Iowa – Owen Flanagan (So./San Francisco, Calif./San Francisco University) scored for the Knights as the Carleton College men's soccer team earned a 1-1 draw under the lights at No. 24-ranked Wartburg College.

This was Carleton's (2-3-1) second match against a nationally-ranked opponent in as many days.

In the 24th minute, Flanagan gave Carleton the lead as he notched his second goal of the season. Ben Pennell (Fy./San Francisco, Calif./Lick-Wilmerding) sent in a cross that fell to Flanagan, who hit it back across the goal and into the net.

In the 55th minute, the hosts leveled the score when Curtis Ratzer scored off an assist from Caleb Halleran.

It was a physical match that featured 24 total fouls and eight yellow cards, five of them by Wartburg (3-1-3). The teams continued to press the attack in search for the decisive goal, setting up an exciting final stretch.

The home team nearly moved in front after a flurry of action in the 84th minute. A shot off the crossbar was followed up by two more quick shots, the first of which was blocked while the second was saved by Daniel Linder (Jr./Evanston, Ill./Evanston Township).

Carleton had the final four shots of the contest. Flanagan banged a shot off the crossbar in the 90th minute, and a follow-up attempt by Pennell was saved.

Wartburg finished with a narrow advantage in shots 15-13, but both sides put seven attempts on goal.
