MINNEAPOLIS – The Carleton College women's tennis team cruised past Macalester College, 8-1, on Saturday, securing both the No. 2 seed and with it a first-round bye in the upcoming MIAC Playoffs.
The Knights (12-1, 8-1 MIAC) raced out to a 3-0 lead with a decisive sweep of the doubles contests.
Mary Frances Hose (So./Columbia, Mo./Rock Bridge) and
Amelia Asfaw (Fy./Seattle, Wash./Seattle Prep), the No. 7-ranked tandem in the region improved to 7-0 as a pairing with an 8-2 triumph atop the lineup.
Ingrid Smith (Fy./Edina, Minn./Edina) and
Mariam Nechiporuk (Fy./Portland, Ore./Lake Oswego) matched their teammates score and also stayed undefeated in doubles as a tandem.
Completing the doubles sweep,
Sydney Bell (Jr./Lafayette, Calif./Acalanes) and
Taylor Thulson (Sr./Louisville, Colo./Niwot) dominated their opponents en route to an 8-0 victory at the third slot.
Piper Brown's (Fy./Mt. Pleasant, S.C./Porter-Gaud) 6-0, 6-0 shutout at No. 5 singles was followed by Hose's 6-0, 6-1 triumph at No. 1 singles that secured the team victory.
Asfaw,
Miriam Shteyman (Fy./Plymouth, Minn./Wayzata), and
Alisa Makatsaria (Jr./New York, N.Y./Singapore American School) added straight-set victories as well.
Macalester's lone team point came at No. 3 singles were the Scots' Meg Ulrich came back from a set down to prevail 2-6, 6-2, 10-7.

Carleton wraps up the regular season with a 2:00 p.m. match against Bethel University on Sunday, May 1 at the Rogers (Minn.) Tennis Club.
