ST. PAUL, Minn. –
Jeremy Beckler became the newest member of the Knights' 1,000-point club, and
Beck Page poured in a season-best 20 points as the Carleton College men's basketball team pulled away in the second half for an 85-70 road win over University of Northwestern (Minn.)
"Really impressive offensive performance tonight," said Carleton head coach
Ryan Kershaw. "We got off to a great start offensively to start the second half and made just enough stops to create a cushion. It shows a high level of execution that we had 16 made 3's for the game and 0 turnovers in the second half.
"Congrats to Jeremy on a tremendous accomplishment, scoring his 1,000th career point tonight. He has essentially achieved this feat in less than two and a half seasons, and it is great to see his name associated with some of the best players to wear a Carleton uniform."
Carleton (8-2) shot 49 percent from the floor, including 56 percent in the second half. The Knights were 16-of-36 (44 percent) overall from beyond the arc, tied for the third-highest single game total in recorded team history (
see chart below). Carleton finished with 25 assists and committed only six turnovers, tied for the fewest giveaways by the Knights since the 2013-14 season finale.
Northwestern (5-5) shot 44 percent overall but was held to only 20 percent (6-of-30) from 3-point range.
Carleton trailed 27-24 with 5:20 left in the first half, but the Knights went on an 11-2 run over the next three minutes and did not trail again in the contest. Beckler got that spurt started with a driving layup followed by back-to-back 3-pointers by Page. After Northwestern scored to snap its drought,
Matt Banovetz drained a triple of his own to give the visitors a 35-29 lead.
The Knights eventually held a 37-34 advantage at halftime, then made 12-of their first-17 shots after intermission. That surge included a 3-pointer by Beckler at the 15:54 mark, making him the 30th player in team history to reach 1,000 career points (see chart below).
Carleton widened its lead to 18 points at 75-57 with 5:43 remaining. Northwestern sliced the deficit in half with an 11-2 run, but Beckler drained his fourth 3-pointer of the game to push the margin back to double digits and squash any hopes of a late comeback for the home team.
Beckler was 8-of-13 overall and 4-of-6 from beyond the arc as he surpassed 20 points for the 21st time in his career.
Page concluded the evening 6-for-10 from downtown, the second-highest triple total of his career. He smashed his previous season high and finished with second-most points he's scored at Carleton.
Banovetz also went 4-of-6 from long range and totaled 14 points, including 11 during the second half. He collected nine rebounds, narrowly missing a double-double, to go along with three steals and three assists.
Spencer Goetz added a career-high eight points. Both
Luke Harris and
Alex Gibbens contributed seven assists—with the former setting a new career best and the latter matching his—in addition to their matching nine-point scoring totals.
Caleb Hoilien and Micah Pocernich had 16-points apiece to pace the Eagles, while Henry Fahnbulleh added 14 points and nine boards for the hosts.
