NORTHFIELD, Minn. – The Carleton College women's basketball team was firing on all cylinders as the Knights shot a blistering 57.8 percent overall and got back into the win column with a 74-45 triumph over College of St. Scholastica.
Emma Henry notched her third double-double of the season—with game highs of 18 points and 10 rebounds—as Carleton posted season bests for both points scored and fewest points allowed.
The overall shooting percentage for Carleton (2-5, 1-5 MIAC) was the best single-game performance by a MIAC squad this season and the fifth-best percentage in recorded team history
(see chart below). Focused on quality over quantity, the Knights went 5-of-8 from 3-point range (62.5 percent).
"It was good to get back on the court and put together a total team effort," said Carleton head coach
Tammy Metcalf-Filzen. "Lots of work to do, but we are focused on continuing to improve."
The Carleton offense was consistently effective, as the Knights shot at least 50 percent both inside and outside the arc in every quarter en route to their best shooting performance since Jan. 3, 2009 (33-of-56, .589, vs. Hamline). Meanwhile, the Knights' defense limited St. Scholastica (0-8, 0-6 MIAC) to only 27.4 percent shooting overall and an ice-cold 13.3 percent (4-of-30) from 3-point range.
Carleton never trailed and had three other players join Henry in reaching double figures for scoring.
Jasmine Choi added 15 points and five rebounds, while
Amelia Solt—the MIAC-leading scorer in 2022-23—contributed 14 points to go along with three steals, two rebounds, and two assists.
Aiana Whitfield chipped in 13 points, five rebounds, and a game-high four assists.
Overall, nine players scored for the Knights, including the first career 3-pointer for
Liz Hiatt and an old-fashioned three-point play for
Jasmine Madonado, resulting in her first collegiate points. Although
Aurora Davis did not score, she found several other ways to contribute to the all-around effort by pulling down eight rebounds, handing out two assists, and blocking a shot.
Carleton led 18-12 after the first quarter and outscored the visitors 18-12 again in the second stanza to take a 36-24 advantage into the locker room. Any hopes the Saints had of putting together a second-half rally vanished after the Knights scored the first six points after intermission, removing any doubt about the outcome. The margin grew as wide as 30 points during the fourth quarter.
Eight of nine players scored for St. Scholastica, but only two reached double figures. Lexi Imdieke had 13 points to pace the Saints, who also received a 10-point, six-rebound, two-steal performance off the bench from Liz Frase.
Up Next for the Knights
Carleton visits the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse for a 7:00 p.m. tipoff on Tuesday, Dec. 13. That will be the Knights' final game action until after the holiday break.
