Knights open post-Thanksgiving slate with 69-56 loss to Augsburg

NORTHFIELD, Minn. – Emma Henry (Jr./Prior Lake, Minn./Academy of Holy Angels) notched her third career double-double with a season-best 16 points and a career-high 14 rebounds, but the Carleton College women's basketball team absorbed a 69-56 setback to Augsburg University.

Jasmine Choi (Jr./Maple Grove, Minn./Osseo) contributed 20 points in her season debut, and Amelia Solt (Fy./Loveland, Colo./Thompson Valley) chipped in 12 points.

"We were disappointed in the outcome, but we also understand the game has to be played 5 on 5, something we haven't been able to do," said Carleton head coach Tammy Metcalf-Filzen. "We will get better as our players return and get back to game shape."

The game was knotted 11-11 after Solt hit a 3-pointer with 6:16 still to play in the first quarter. Augsburg (5-1, 2-1 MIAC) went on a 10-0 run over the next four minutes, but Carleton (1-3, 0-3 MIAC) responded with a 16-2 burst spanning four minutes to open up a 27-23 advantage, the Knights' largest lead of the contest.

After some back-and-forth play, the Auggies closed the second quarter on a 13-5 spurt that gave the visitors a 43-36 lead heading into halftime.

Both teams were in rhythm on offense early on as Carleton shot 59 percent before intermission compared to 52 percent for Augsburg. The two sides cooled down after the break, connecting at rates of 25 and 32 percent, respectively.

Augsburg outscored Carleton 16-5 in the third quarter and led by at least 13 points throughout the final stanza.

Carleton shot 41 percent overall and 35 percent (6-of-17) from beyond the arc. The Knights hurt themselves at the charity stripe, connecting on only 2-of-9 attempts. Augsburg connected at a 42 percent clip overall and was 9-of-26 (35 percent) from long range.

This was Choi's fifth career game with at least 20 points.

Anja Smith posted a double-double with a game-high 26 points and team-best 12 rebounds to lead the Auggies. Jaley Coplin made six 3-pointers and tallied 21 of her 24 points in the first half. No other player had more than six points for the Augsburg.
