Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Knights claim fourth straight road win, top Augsburg 84-67

MINEAPOLIS – Jeremy Beckler (Sr./Lino Lakes, Minn./White Bear Lake) poured in a game-high 25 points and Luke Harris (So./Piedmont, Calif./Piedmont) added 24 points as the Carleton College men's basketball team improved to 4-0 on the season with an 84-67 win at Augsburg University.

"A quality performance from our team this evening," said Carleton head coach Ryan Kershaw. "We defended well for the majority of the evening and executed at a high level offensively throughout most of the game. To score 84 points on the road, including 21 from our bench, was great to see."

Wednesday's contest was tied 8-8 before Alex Gibbens (Jr./New Canaan, Conn./New Canaan) drained a 3-pointer at the 15:24 mark of the first half, pushing Carleton (4-0, 2-0 MIAC) ahead for good. That bucket ignited the Knights' 18-5 run over the next five minutes.

Augsburg (2-4, 1-2 MIAC) trimmed the deficit to nine with a little over seven minutes remaining in the first half, but Matt Wyffels (Sr./Lino Lakes, Minn./Centennial) gave the Knights a spark by scoring his team's next five points, including a dunk-and-1 over Isaac Rabaey.

Harris capped his 5-for-5 opening half with a layup right before intermission, giving Carleton a 44-30 lead heading into the break.

Carleton maintained at least a 13-point advantage throughout the second half and led by as many as 21 points on multiple occasions.

The Knights shot 52.5 percent overall and went 8-of-22 (36.4 percent) from long range. Augsburg shot 49.1 percent with a 7-of-15 (46.7 percent) showing beyond the arc.

This was Harris' fourth 20-plus point performance to begin the season. Beckler fell a rebound shy of a double-double as he notched his 17th career game with at least 20 points. They rank 1-2 in the MIAC this season by averaging 24.0 and 21.8 points per game, respectively, and comprise 1-of the-11 sets of teammates across all three divisions of NCAA men's basketball to each average at least 20 points.

Beck Page (Sr./Longmont, Colo./Longmont) was the other Knight in double figures, coming off the bench to score a season-high 10 points, including a pair of 3-pointers. Gibbens and Matt Banovetz (Jr./Minneapolis, Minn./Academy of Holy Angels) had seven points apiece, while Chuck Sweat (Jr./Glencoe, Ill./New Trier) connected twice from long range for the Knights' other six points.

Connor Knoepfle had 21 points to pace Augsburg, which also received an 11-point effort from Rabaey.

The 84 points matched Carleton's season high. The victory snapped the Knights' five-game slide against Augsburg and represented the Carleton's largest win over the Auggies since a 74-56 triumph on Jan. 23, 2008.
