NORTHFIELD, Minn. -- In the regular-season finale for the Carleton College men's soccer team, goals from
Ben Pennell (Fy./San Francisco, Calif./Lick-Wilmerding) and
Briggs Priem (Fy./Milwaukie, Ore./Rex Putnam) led the Knights to a 2-0 victory over saint John's University, earning Carleton the No. 4 seed in the upcoming MIAC Playoffs and a home game during the quarterfinals.
Saint John's (7-6-3, 4-5-1 MIAC) started strong, sending eight shots goalward and one on target before the Knights got their first shot off. The Johnnies' stranglehold on the match was broken in the 24th minute when Priem slipped
Colin Kroll (Jr./Wilton, Conn./Pomfret School) into the box with a through ball. Kroll immediately handed off to Pennell, whose shot deflected off Johnnie keeper Evan Siefken and into the side-netting to give the Knights a 1-0 lead.
Saint John's finished the opening half with a 13-6 advantage in shots, but the score remained 1-0 in favor of the Knights.
Barely eight minutes into the second half, Carleton doubled its lead thanks to a series of quick passes.
Blake Jones (So./Urbandale, Iowa/Waukee) pushed the ball ahead to Pennell, who immediately chopped it through the legs of his defender right onto the foot of Priem, who was perfectly positioned at the top of the six-yard box to tap home with composure.
The Johnnies' best chance came in the 62nd minute, where forward Carter Hermanson slipped into the box and placed a deceptive shot towards the bottom corner. Carleton goalkeeper
Daniel Linder (Jr./Evanston, Ill./Evanston Township) reacted acrobatically, got his left hand to the ball, and gathered well to deny a comeback. He had six saves in the shutout.
Carleton out-shot Saint John's 10-3 in the second half and both sides concluded the day with 16 attempts overall.
