Knights fall to Augsburg on the road

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. - The Carleton Volleyball team fell to Augsburg University in three sets Wednesday night at Si Melby Hall. The loss leaves the Knights with an overall record of 5-16 (1-9 MIAC), while the Auggies improve to 16-7 (5-5 MIAC).

Carleton came out strong in the first set. Though Augsburg found the first point, a kill from Kerrigan Candra (So./Joliet, Ill./Plainfield Central) put the Knights on the board. Her kill was followed by kills from Annelise Sokolow (Jr./Draper, Utah/Juan Diego Catholic) and Jancyn Appel (Sr./Kansas City, Mo./The Pembroke Hill School) as part of a string of four straight points to push the Knights out to an early 4-1 lead. The Auggies, however, responded with a 9-1 run that gave them a 10-5 lead. A kill from Sokolow stopped the bleeding, and kills from Sylvia Dixon (Fy./Vienna, Va./James Madison) plus a service ace from Isabel Macia (Fy./Coral Gables, Fla./Divine Savior Academy) brought the Knights within two (10-8). Later in the set, with the score 17-14, the Auggies scored eight of the final nine points of the set to close out the 25-15 win in the opening frame.

In the second set, both teams traded points to open up the set. With the Auggies leading 5-4, a kill from Kerrigan Candra tied things at five. Later, with the Knights trailing 8-5, Candra was there again with a kill to bring the Knights within two (9-7). However, it was as close as they would get in the second set.  The Auggies went on to score seven straight points to put them up 16-7. Carleton was able to put a few points on the board after that, but Augsburg scored eight of the final 10 points in the frame and cruised to 25-11 win in set two.

After Carleton scored the opening two points in the third set, the Auggies scored seven straight, jumping out to an early 7-2 lead. A timeout gave Carleton a boost, and a kill from Candra got the Knights back on the board. However, the Auggies continued to put on the pressure, and despite good efforts from the Knights, found themselves up 16-7. From there, the Auggies continued their push to take the set 25-11, as well as the match 3-0.

The Knights were led by Kerrigan Candra with five kills and nine digs, followed by Sylvia Dixon and Annelise Sokolow with four kills each. Kailey Smith (Sr./Racine, Wis./Dunlap) also tallied seven digs, while Isabel Macia tallied 16 assists.
