MOORHEAD, Minn. –
Nathan Streiff (So./New Glarus, Wis./New Glarus) had eight catches for a season-best 81 yards and two touchdowns, including a 15-yard game-tying score in the final minute of regulation, but the Carleton College football team saw its six-game winning streak snapped as the Knights fell in overtime, 20-13, at Concordia College-Moorhead.
Neither side played flawless football as the sides combined for six turnovers, a blocked punt, a bad snap on another punt, and a muffed punt return. In fact, the teams combined for three of those turnovers in the first 4:06 of the game.
Carleton (6-1, 4-1 MIAC) took the opening kickoff and marched down the field before Concordia (4-3, 2-3 MIAC) forced and then recovered a fumble at its own 19-yard line. The Cobbers fumbled the ball back three plays later with
Blake Neithart (Jr./Pasadena, Calif./Loyola) pouncing on the loose ball for Carleton, only to have the Knights immediately give possession away with the first of their two interceptions.
Concordia drove the ball up to Carleton's 3-yard line, but a sack by
Isaac Simons (Sr./Oconomowoc, Wis./Lake Country Lutheran) forced the Cobblers to kick a 27-yard field goal for the first points of the game.
The Knights responded on the next drive, marching 75 yards in 12 plays capped by
Jonathan Singleton (Sr./San Martin, Calif./Live Oak) connecting with Streiff for a 15-yard touchdown. The extra point put the visitors ahead 7-3 with 2:54 still to play in the opening quarter.
Neither team scored again until the 4:41 mark of the second quarter, Concordia blocked a punt and Stuart DeMerit scooped and scored, giving the Cobbers a 10-7 lead.
In the closing seconds of the half, Carleton elected to let
Trent Ramirez (Sr./Denver, Colo./George Washington) attempt a 51-yard field goal. The kick had plenty of distance but missed to the left.
Neither offense was able to do much in the third quarter, until Concordia advanced to the Carleton 5-yard line. The Knight defense bent but did not break, forcing the Cobbers to settle for a 21-yard field goal, bring the score to 13-7.
The fourth quarter saw Carleton turn the ball over twice in the red zone, robbing the Knights of two chances to put points on the scoreboard.
Carleton got the ball back after a punt with 2:41 left in regulation for what might be the Knights' final possesion of the game.
Aiden Chang (Sr./Palo Alto, Calif./Palo Alto) started the drive with a seven-yard run. Singleton completed passes to three different receivers, and Chang ripped off a 14-yard burst to bring the ball to the 15-yard line. Singleton found Streiff in the end zone with 59 seconds remaining, tying the score at 13-13. A missed extra-point attempt sent the game into overtime.
Cobbers quarterback Cooper Mattern scrambled 24 yards on the first play of overtime, then ran it in from yard out to give Concordia the 20-13 lead.
On Carleton's possession, a fourth-down pass was off the mark, and the hosts escaped with the victory.
Singleton finished with 215 yards passing. Mattern threw for 91 yards and ran for 76 more. Cobbers workhorse running back Peyton Mortenseon carried the ball 32 times for 119 yards.
Four players had double-digit tackles for Carleton, including a game-high 14 stops for
Noah Eckersley-Ray (Sr./Yarmouth, Maine/Yarmouth).
Michael Carey (Jr./Haddonfield, N.J./Haddonfield Memorial) had two of the Knights' five sacks.
Next Up for the Knights
