NORTHFIELD, Minn. - The Carleton Volleyball team fell to the College of Saint Benedict after three hard fought sets at West Gym on Saturday night. The loss leaves Carleton with an overall record of 5-14 (1-7 MIAC), while Saint Benedict improves to 14-7 (6-1 MIAC).
Carleton fell behind 7-2 early in the first set, but a four-point run brought the Knights within one (7-6). After back-and-forth play through the next four points, the Bennies went on a 13-2 run to open up a 22-10 lead. The Knights responded with a 6-2 run, including a kill from
Jancyn Appel (Sr./Kansas City, Mo./The Pembroke Hill School) and a service ace from
Kerrigan Candra (So./Joliet, Ill./Plainfield Central) to make it 24-16. However, the Bennies held their ground with a final kill to finish the set 25-16.
In the second set, Carleton came out strong, eventually opening up a two-point lead thanks to a kill from
Isabel Macia (Fy./Coral Gables, Fla./Divine Savior Academy) and a great double block from
Catie Marvin (Jr./Wilmington, Del./The Tatnall School) and
Kerrigan Candra to make it 8-6. They maintained the lead until the Bennies tied it up at eleven. From there, the score went back-and-forth. Tied 14-14, the Bennies pulled away, using eight unanswered points to make it 22-14 in their favor. The Knights couldn't quite find their footing after that, and a final kill from Saint Benedict took the set 25-19.
The third set again saw Carleton out to an early lead. After being tied at two, three consecutive kills from Appel made it 5-2 Knights. Following a similar script, they maintained their slight lead , which eventually grew to 8-4. But the Bennies came roaring back with a 10-1 run that not only tied the score at 10-10, but also included a string of seven straight points to put them up 17-11. Down 19-13, the Knights battled, using their own 8-1 run to regain the lead (21-20). But the Bennies responded with three straight points, and although the finish was highly contested, they ultimately held on to take the set 26-24.
The Knights were led by a double-double performance from
Kerrigan Candra, who tallied 12 kills and 14 digs.
Jancyn Appel followed with seven kills as well as four total blocks.
Annelise Sokolow (Jr./Draper, Utah/Juan Diego Catholic) also totaled seven kills and 15 digs, a mark which tied her with
Kailey Smith (Sr./Racine, Wis./Dunlap) for the team high in digs on the night. Additionally,
Isabel Macia totaled 30 assists.
Up Next for the Knights
The Knights will continue MIAC play next week, going on the road to face Hamline University on Friday, October 21st. They then take on Augsburg University on Wednesday, October 26th before returning home to face St. Olaf on the 29th for their final game of the regular season.
