MOORHEAD, MInn. –
Beck Page (Jr./Longmont, Colo./Longmont) totaled career bests of 25 points and seven 3-pointers as the Carleton College men's basketball team rallied for an 87-75 road win in a Sunday matinee at Concordia College-Moorhead. The Knights finished the contest with a 28-9 run, including a game-ending 15-0 surge, to secure their sixth consecutive victory.
This is Carleton's (12-3, 9-2 MIAC) longest win streak since a 14-gamer that stretched from Jan. 14, 2017-Feb. 21, 2017.
"Heck of a win for our boys today," said Carleton head coach
Guy Kalland. "Concordia has been playing a high level over the past few weeks, particularly on their home floor. To shoot 52 percent from the field, as well as 60 percent from 3-point range, and 88 percent at the free throw line on the road is really impressive. Our guys were certainly up to the challenge, and it was great to see us get so many quality contributions from everyone on the floor."
The Knights found themselves in relatively unfamiliar territory with a high-scoring first half. Carleton had held two of its previous four opponents under 50 points for the game. This time, the Cobbers (4-8, 3-6 MIAC) put together a 12-1 run in the middle of the frame, and Carleton closed the opening twenty minutes up 40-39. This Knights' first half total was due largely in part to a blistering 8-of-10 performance (80 percent) mark from beyond the arc as team.
In a sign of things to come, Page drained a 3-pointer on the game's opening possession, and he was 4-of-5 from long range in the first half. The opening period saw
John Carragher (So./Glencoe, Ill./New Trier) drain both of his shots from beyond the arc, and both
Alex Gibbens (So./New Canaan, Conn./New Canaan) and
Jeremy Beckler (Jr./Lino Lakes, Minn./White Bear Lake) knocked down a triple apiece.
After the halftime break, the Cobbers made their first five shots and eventually built a 66-59 advantage with 10:27 remaining. This was the largest deficit either side faced up to the point in the contest.
Page hit his fifth 3-pointer of the game to spark the Knights' comeback, and his sixth triple gave Carleton a 70-68 lead with 7:09 still to play.
Concordia inched back in front 75-72, but with 3:48 left in the game, Beckler hit a 3-pointer to tie the score for the 14th time in the game. On the next possession, Page followed with his seventh 3-point basket—making him 3-for-3 from beyond the arc in the second half—to give the Knights the lead for good. Carleton proceeded to go 9-of-10 at the free throw line over the final 2:32 to seal the game as the Cobbers missed their final seven shots from the floor and were held scoreless over the final 4:41 of the match.
Not only were Page's point total and 3-point figure new career highs, but he matched his career best with three assists. The seven 3-pointers are tied for sixth most in recorded team history (
see chart below), while his 7-of-8 showing (87.5 percent) from beyond the arc is fourth-best in team annals (min. 5 3FG made).
Outside of Page's performance, Beckler matched his season average of 17 points and five rebounds as he was 2-for-4 from long range.
Luke Harris (Fy./Piedmont, Calif./Piedmont) chipped in 11 points and a triple to go along with his team-leading seven boards and five assists.
Alex Battist (Sr./Maple Grove, Minn./Maple Grove) was the fourth Knight in double figures, tallying 11 points, three rebounds, two assists, and a blocked shot.
Matt Banovetz (So./Edina, Minn./Academy of Holy Angels) joined
Alex Gibbens (So./New Canaan, Conn./New Canaan), and Carragher in hitting a pair of 3-pointers as that trio accounted for nine, eight, and six points, respectively.
The Knights concluded the game with 16 treys on only 26 attempts (61.5 percent). That is the most 3-pointers by the Knights since also hitting 16 at the University of Chicago on Nov. 24, 2001. That total is good for third all-time, while the shooting percentage is fourth in team history (min. 10 3FG made).
Four starters scored in double figures for the Cobbers,. Most notable was Rowan Nelson, who paced Concordia with 22 points, including 14 in the second half. Talon Haffner had 17 points in 21 minutes, Jackson Jangula accounted for 15 points and Dylan Inniger notched 13 points. Concordia shot 45 percent on the day, including 8-of-22 (36 percent) from beyond the arc.
